I have a pc with a pc chips m571 board. when booting it shows 49 mb ram. No matter what memory chips I put in this is all it will see. Right now I have 2 32mb chips in it.
It is pc100 sdram. Can anyone tell me whats wrong with this thing?
Thanks in advance.

What happens when you keep only 32 MB on mainboard ?

NP taylor.

Download SiS Soft Sandra from http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/sandra and test your system with it. Hopefully it will answer you problem/ questions. Look into Memory Test area. It seems you might need BIOS flash.

With the 1 32mb chip installed, sandra says
"total physical memory = 44mb".

Get the latest one mate. Actually d/l all three. If BIOS updater says one is not suitable then you can try other one as well.

When I flash the bios, do I have to boot back to my floppy drive and run it from there?? Thanks

Not really, if you download the new BIOS to a folder on the C: drive (make the name 8 characters or less with no space, ie. C:\BIOS )
Restart Win98 into MS-DOS mode
Type CD \BIOS
and then run the BIOS flash update from there.

I'm not being funny but you are sure it's a 32 meg 'stick' and not a 64meg one?

Sometime's, it can be hard to tell. If it's a 64 meg one then some of the memory could be being used by, say, an onboard graphics card (if your motherboard has one built in)

If 15 meg was allocated to the gfx card that would leave the 49meg your system is reporting.

Then again, I could just be talking crap!!!

No Andyr, its a 32 mb chip, si sandra shows it as 44mb, and 49mb on boot up. What you say is very reasonable though...
Thanks.

jtaylor, have you tried changing location of RAM sticks ? Is it possible for you to test the same stick(s) on your friends machine ? Or borrow someones RAM for few mins ??
