LowAccord37 Jan 23, 2002, 12:13 AM i have the "dvd quality" copy of lord of the rings and it is an SVCD. can i play that on my cdrom or do i HAVE TO HAVE a DVD-ROM?? if i can play it on the cd-rom what software is required? so far i've tried to play it on the cdrom with no success....any insight is appreciated!
Thanks!
Darkman Jan 23, 2002, 12:37 AM Yes you can play a SVCD on a CDROM, you need the correct codec so that the player (ie WMP, winamp etc) can decode the MPEG2 file. Some good codec packs can be found at VCD Help (http://www.vcdhelp.com/vcdtools).
LowAccord37 Jan 23, 2002, 12:49 AM which codec do i need specifically?? i think i have the Nimo Codec pack
LowAccord37 Jan 23, 2002, 12:51 AM if u can tell me which codec i need for these files it would be really good...when i go to powerdvd and try to run the SVCD it says "an unsupported format in D:"
LowAccord37 Jan 23, 2002, 12:56 AM ok well i just now got the Kristal Studio Pack from the codec page and it still isnt playing my svcd in windows media player. i go to open the file from the svcd and windows media player says Connecting... and just stays like that.
celtic_druid Jan 23, 2002, 01:00 AM Power DVD should play an SVCD just fine.. You just select the drive it is in and it will play.. Also if you have power DVD installed then you already have an MPEG2 video codec installed so wmplayer should also be able to play it, although it will probably not get the aspect ratio right.
Darkman Jan 23, 2002, 01:05 AM The MPEG 2 Codec shown there will let Windows Media Player play MPEG2 (SVCD) files, as the blurb said Play MPEG2 directly with Windows Media Encoder and you can also open MPEG2 directly in most encoders such as TMPGEnc.
Also I thought the name "MPEG 2 Codec" was a bit of a give-away ;)
Or as C_D suggested PowerDVD (or even WinDVD for that matter) would play the SVCD.
LowAccord37 Jan 23, 2002, 07:10 AM well do yall have any clue why it isnt playing it?
celtic_druid Jan 23, 2002, 08:23 AM You are possitive that it is a SVCD... How many CDs is it??
handyguy Jan 23, 2002, 12:02 PM At download.com search for 'svcd' or 'vcd' there should be a program to play them.
KYUSS Jan 23, 2002, 06:06 PM i downloaded a latest version of powerdvd
4.0 Xp i think
now my vcds and svcds play automatically
try that m8
LowAccord37 Jan 23, 2002, 09:48 PM ok well i got the 4.0 XP version and it's still saying "an unsupported disc is in drive D:"
my friend got 4.0 XP tonight and it works for him and not me...what about the diagnostics? setting DMA for my cdrom?
celtic_druid Jan 23, 2002, 10:40 PM Once again... are you sure that it is an SVCD.. Even if it isn't a fully complient one it should still play fine on a PC..
LowAccord37 Jan 23, 2002, 10:51 PM yep it is an SVCD...it's the DVD quality lord of the rings movie...4 cd's and the folders on the disc are EXT, MPEG2, SEGMENT, SVCD...there is an 804 MB .MPG file in the MPEG2 folder

LowAccord37 Jan 26, 2002, 12:01 PM I FINALLY GOT MY LOTR SVCD TO WORK ON MY CDROM!
go to www.videolan.org and download the VIDEOLAN client...it works great!
Indiana Jones Jan 27, 2002, 07:18 PM I got the 4 svcd version of LOTR on friday and when I put it in and tryed to play it through PowerDVD, it said Unsupported Format, but there is away of playing it.
There is a button on the right hand side which lets you switch between file mode and cd mode.
Go to file mode, then click on the Menu button, from there you select where the file is, click on it, press add, then ok.
Now just press the play button and it should play, mine did.
All I want now is a converter so I can convert it from svcd to vcd so it will play on my dvd player.
Action Ocelot Jan 28, 2002, 10:04 AM thx for that m8, i was really struggling with that problem 2 but mine works gr8 now thx!!! U da daddy!

Indiana Jones Jan 29, 2002, 06:13 AM Are you saying that if I choice to create a vcd and load up the svcd file instead of a vcd file, Nero will convert it so it works, great.
Will try it when I get home but I doubt it will work.
I will let you know if it works and if it does, I will send you a copy of the SVCD.
scw Jan 29, 2002, 02:01 PM Hi, INDIANA JONES
YES I HAVE Nero5 version 5.5.5.1 & IF YOU CHOOSE NEW COMPILATION & VIDEO CD(other) THEN CHOOSE TO MAKE A VCD (it also allows you to create an svcd)BUT PICK THE VCD & THEN THE SPEED YOU WANT TO RECORD AT. THEN CHOOSE THE DRIVE YOU HAVE PUT THE SVCDS IN (cdrom/cdr/dvd etc) THEN CLICK ON IT or CLICK & DRAG TO THE LEFT SIDE & DROP (should take a few) THEN IT SHOULD COME UP AS INCORRECT FORMAT TO MAKE A VCD THEN CHOOSE "CONTINUE & Re-ENCODE" THIS SHOULD TAKE A FEW Secs/Mins. THEN AFTER IT IS DONE IT WILL SHOW UP ON THE LEFT SIDE. AFTER THAT CLICK ON THE 8th ICON AT THE TOP JUST BELOW "extras" & THIS WILL START YOUR COPY TO CDR (burning process).
THIS SHOULD WORK JUST FINE. I WOULD PICK A MID SPEED FOR BURNING AN SVCD to VCD.
Email ME AT HOME & I CAN HELP YOU IF YOU NEED ANYTHING ANSWERED WHILE YOU ARE DOING THIS.
PATRICKTIMNEY@shaw.ca TAKE CARE
