I usually browse my pc, and under c:\ there's nothing but folders and config.sys and autoexec.bat

I played around with windows folder and set it to "view hidden files"

I forgot I did that and next time i double clicked on c:\ I saw all those weird files, so i deleted them :) heheheh :) oooops

Can someone with win98SE tell me which files I need under the C:\ directory and if i can just pull them off my windows 98 SE CD?

plz list the files for me so i can copy them back in...

I know one of the files is called io.sys and msdos.sys
and when i search for them on the win98SE cdrom, it can't find them... For some reason, the search won't look in the cab files, and i know they are in there somewhere!
plz help!

Go back to a good copy of the registry .

Toggle F8 ( when , verifying DMA pool message comes on ) or Press
Ctrl during bootup , depends on your computor .

Select , Command prompt only .

After the C prompt , type , scanreg /restore

Follow the prompts and select a registry dated prior to the problems .

For those that find the above site confusing , here is what to do .

Alter MaxBackupCopies from 5 to 14 as per instructions at above site .

Download the zipped copy of the Batch file from ,

Unzip , copy & paste cabrest onto the top of C: in Windows Explorer .

Delete zip file , or save it on floppy , if you want it for others or the
future .

Print the instructions below & stick on your comp in front of you , so

If after following the instructions to Restore , things arn't
working , go to an earlier date & try again .

there's nothing under my drive c:\ but folders (program files, windows...)
So when i start the computer it says "not a valid startup disk" even though there isn't even a disk in the computer! The only way i can get the thing into dos is to put in my boot disk and when i type scanreg /restore it says "bad command or file name...."

wait! i did that scanreg command from c:\windows\command. didnt work! it restarted my computer, but still said - invallid startup disk... had to use my boot disk again to get into dos

There should be a copy of IO.SYS and COMMAND.COM in the c:\windows\command\ebd directory. (assuming you didn't also delete them) :)

The MSDOS.SYS you can create with notepad. It should contain the following: (just cut and paste).

Start up with your Boot disc or Startup disk in ( without cd rom support )
At the A: prompt , type , sys c: and then press ENTER.

Take out the boot disk & restart your computer.

jmatt, if there are no files on Root, then he needs to create/ copy MSDOS.SYS given by QWERTY.

SYS C: will transfer empty MSDOS.SYS to Root with only one line...... i.e.
