Try installing a patch from www.speedguide.net to configure your system for broadband. Saying that i've never had speeds that bad regardless of what OS / System ive been using. Where is he downloading from? Download and run this:

http://www.vantage.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/v2/v2.htm

and tell us what results you get.

he got back in touch with ntl and they did a ping test on the computer and said it is fine ( the tecy said it was better than his )
I also told him to shut down any other progs running in the back ground one by one and try downloading again this also made no difference

It can only be a few things of course but one's that spring to mind are as follows.

PC-wise it could be a dialup speed tweak which was installed previously. These tend to cause havoc by setting incorrect maximum mtu settings. It would be best to uninstall this first before installing such a patch for a cm. To be honest it may be best backing up everything and reinstalling windows so he know he has a clean system to start with.

Quick question, sorry if I have missed the answer earlier, are we talking about a usb or ethernet option here. If USB this could be part of the problem due to the spec on the machine.

Otherwise it's gonna be ntl side. Has he tried resetting the modem or connection?

Let us know, T.

DONT TAKE ANY BULL FROM NTL:furious:

the person who installed it should of done a seed test before he went. that is what telewest did for me

he went to this site and entered a password then downloaded a 30 meg file to test it

I received a virus after downloading a broadband speedtest recommended here on this forum yesterday :
File C:\Program Files\Broadband Speed Test\SpeedTester.exe *may* be infected, as it matches the pattern of virus: BACKDOOR.Trojan
BEWARE !!!!!
