Hey, is TMPGenc supposed to be really slow when converting avi (divx) to mpeg/mpg? I've been converting it for 58 minutes so far (for a 152 mb file), and it's only 8 percent done! Someone please help me out!

Good question and I've experienced the same problem. For insatnce it took 9 hours to convert the Green mile. I haven't had a movie to convert under 4 hours. According to the guides, it should only take 2-4 hours. If you found out an answer, let me know because I'm feeling your pain.

If you try to convert in Pal, then it takes twice the time, as in Ntsc.

Is there any programs that go faster? It takes my comp 12 hours for 1 152mb file (and there's 3 I need to do)!!! Is there another program that converts avi(divx) to vcd(mpeg) that goes FASTER than TPMGenc(whatever it's called)?

i'm using version 12a.
for 'motion search...'
go to 'configure' on lower right corner > video tab > located at the bottom

This sounds like a case of a slow comp.
I can convert a 152 MB Movie part in about 2 or 3 hrs. and I'm running:

Intel Celeron Processor
833 MHZ
512 MB of Ram
40 Gig HDD

So it is ten to one your system.

It is actually a little faster converting from divx than straight from vob files depending on the source resolution. 9 hours for a 4 hour movie is quite normal cool C im guessing your using an amd athlon 800mhz +.

Here are a couple of stats on my convert from last night...

My System

Tbird 1.2ghz
384mb RAM
20gig ATA/66 HD

My file

Meet Joe Black
2-520mb files DIVX 4.12 AVI being converted to MPEG-2 for a SVCD
512x384 screen size.
The process to convert one of the two files took 3hrs 42 minutes, but in order to cut the file size down I lowered the bitrate to 850kbps... and NORMAL quality.

I would NOT recomend that bitrate for an SVCD ;) as the quality will be very poor anytime anthing moves on screen.

Some interesting items of note are that this process is VERY CPU intensive. Win2k taskmanager indicates the CPU to be running at 100% for the duration of the process, but only using about 150mb of my memory.

Hope this helps!

very true! especially from a divx source. divx codecs are more CPU intensive than mpeg1 or mpeg2 codecs to begin with. add to that the CPU intensive process of encoding to an mpeg and you've practically doubled your re-encode time.

coding any mpeg or streaming video format is 100% cpu intensive. doesn't matter about HDD or memeory available above 64mb. basically cant realy improve unless you have a better system.
