When i get a new HD for this old pc, should i buy an adapter card so i can get faster transfer speeds? right now, i think this pc is only rated at the speed of 33. Will i notice enough difference if i use the adapter card? thanks.

Nope, don't get a new adapter card. Since your motherboard's front side bus speed is only 33, any new HD you put in will be reduced to that speed.

so what kind of HD should i buy then? i want an 80gig. should i go with a 7200 rpm or 5400 rpm? since the mobo is slow, will it make a difference

I would go for a 7200rpm because you can use it in your new computer if you ever get one. Besides, it's not that much of a price difference... and if you do ge a 5400rpm one, and later upgrade your mobo/computer, you'll regret it.
