The general idea seems 2b not to label dvd-r discs. Anyone done it with success?

you can do it if you want. The problem is that anytime you label something it does 2 things. 1. it screws with the way the disk rotates which can cause errors in reading. 2. Labels have a problem with going bad and coming of which will screw with the rotation even worse. If you are going to do it with a sharpie then fine, other then that I wouldn't recommend it if you are planning on keeping it.

labels alter the balance of the disc like a wheel on ur car.
at high speeds they will vibrate and the picture quality will suffer

I've found that the small core labels seem to work well. DVD players that wouldn't play full labeled discs, played the same media fine with a small core label. I think a core label on unbranded discs looks more professional than labelling them by hand with marker.

I label all my DVDRs and I haven't had any problems as I use the CD labels and the press it stamp which places the labels on as straight as possible.
Providing you use good qulaity labels not the cheap ones that peel off after a few weeks you will be ok.
The Full DVD labels which cover the whole disk are not recomended as they never seam to go on straight so they would really *uck the spin up !
