The 5.1 Surround on the xbox is great. As far as i know all games are supporting this & it greatly enhances the gameplay if you have the right kit of course. The Gamecube only supports Dolby Surround but its still very effective.

You need a receiver that takes opitcal output, you need either the HD pack from MS or the stuff from Monster, and an opitcal wire. Let me say this though, WOW. It kicks *** playing in 5.1 . Halo is great with all the bullets shooting past you.

Gamecube does 5.1 (Rogue Leader), Factor 5 gave out the technology a few weeks back. It's actually Dolby Pro Logic 2 5.1, there's no real true heavy bass channel, but it is 5.1 no doubt.

This really pi$$ed me off with the gamecube. no optical out yes u get pro logic out of it but who has a pro logic 2 amp. However XBOX and optical out (advanced scart) is awesome pi$$es all over any other console. Ps2 can only do 5.1 in movies (MGS2 intro etc) and gamecube has no optical (no dolby digital then) out but XBOX plays 5.1 in all games (so far I think) Halo is superb. U gotta hear it to understand. Im using Old sony DD amp with mission 734 floor standers and its wow..........

DTS, DD, Pro Logic 2 are all backwards compatible, so if you have a DTS system, and a Gamecube hooked up the the A/V cables, it'll play it in Pro Logic 2.

It doesn't you need to have an map that is pro logic 2 compatible otherwise it will play in normal pro logic.

And DTS isn't backwards compatible. If you don't have it you don't get ****.

Well, DTS I guess you could say is backward compatible with Dolby Digital 5.1. DD 5.1 is a more scaled down version of DTS, but nothing even remotely noticeable unless you have a high end receiver with very efficient speakers.

However, Prologic 2 is a bit newer and not all receivers that can play DTS have that pro logic 2 processor built in. But, that isn't even a big huge deal, all you are gaining from Pro Logic to Prologic 2 is 5.0 sound. Prologic was a 4.0 sound.

(5.0 meaning discrete audio signals to the 5 main speakers and no subwoofer support)
(4.0 meaning discrete audio signals to the front and center speaker and a shred audio signal to the rear speakers)

But, for an Xbox, to get truely great sound, get a digital receiver and throw on an optical cable. Sounds GREAT!

Just Played Halo in 5.1 & it rocks really puts you in the Thick of the Action,My System is through a Yamaha DSPA320 amp(70 watts per channel)Mission Centre,Jamo surrounds although I forgot to plug in my sub which is a REL Q100 I will test that later,I would really urge any one to get a good setup For their X-Box

DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 are two competing technologies. They aren't compatible in any way. You need to have an amp that can handle both to output both. Dolby Digital is part of the DVD spec, which is why it is present in almost all DVDs, wheras DTS (a Sony product) is aditional to the spec.

which one of the adapters do you need to have to hook up the fiber optic cable? The Advance AV Pack or the High Definition AV Pack? And does either support a S-Video input?

i am planning to buy this surround sound system (RCA RT2350) (http://www.buy.com/retail/electronics/product.asp?sku=90113042) and was wondering if this is dolby digital 5.1? and do i still need the advance pack to make it 5.1 or can i just directly put the yellow, red, and white cables to the receiver to have dolby surround? and is this surround sound good or bad to purchase?

pls reply thank you

You need an optical input or coax digital input for your receiver to decode 5.1. The gamecube is not 5.1!!! it is prologic II. All Prologic II does is decode stereo sources (2.0) into 5 channels (plus a sub if you have one) but it does not designate certain sounds to each speaker like DD and DTS.

I am bringing the oldest topic BACK!!!!
I am going to buy this receiver.... Panasonic SA-HE70 (http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/productdetailsnew.asp?modelcode=PAN-SAHE70&affiliateid=76#) Will this work, it does have digital input, so I guess it will....

And also, can anyone give me an idea as to what 'decent' speakers I can buy for my money? Around £120? 5.1 of course!

The Dolby Digital is really good on the XBOX. For example, in the Star Wars Old Republic game, you can talk to people and if you walk away while they are talking, you can hear them in the back of you including if they are towards your rear left or rear right.

mrsquirrel, if you thought you had great sound with the 5.1 DD, you need to go somewhere to listen to the DTS, and thats an xbox plus :)

If you don't already have a home theater then the package plan is the way to go. I highly recommend it.

But at the same time, never sell yourself short on useing the XBOX as an entertainment device... buy a real receiver for that.

Yes, but if you ae pitching pennies or don't have the room for a full system, this is a great alternative. :disturb:
