Ok, so I'm downloading tons of Dark Angel videos from Morpheus and realize that they're all in .avi form and NOT in mpeg form. I have previously downloaded a video in .avi form and it didn't work/play using Windows Media Player. The other videos I have are in mpeg and they work fine. However, I am downloading lots of .avi movies right now and I don't think Windows Media Player will play .avi videos. How do I make these videos work? Do I need a new media player? Where can I download it?

Thank you.:hdspin:Help!!!

Of course microsoft windows media player plays AVI's... they invented them..

AVI's can use many different codecs for both audio and video.. The problem is that you don't have the correct codec to play the file..

I would suggest that you install the divx codec http://www.divx.com you may also want to install the old divx codec as it comes with the divx audio codec... also it can be usefull if you are thinking of converting to VCD... The nimo codec pack also contains many usefull codecs.

Thank you very much for your help. So do you think I should install DivX3.11 rather than DivX4? I have Windows 98 w/ Pentium 2 (don't know if this info is necessary). So If I do NOT want to make a VCD (just want to watch on PC monitor) I do NOT have to convert the AVI to any other format, right?

The divx4 filter will playback divx3 and divx4 content fine.. However if the AVI is divx311 and you try to convert using TMPGEnc and the divx4 filter is set to play back then you will have problems..

To just watch to movies and not do any converting or AVI encoding of your own I would just install divx4.12

I've d/led 4.12 and already had 3.11 installed and I am still having problems viewing .avi on windows media 7.1. When I try to play them, a window pops up with the following error message

"The file format is invalid"

I have also tried FourCC changer and I still can't play the friggin files.

Can anybody offer anymore suggestions ?

Also, control panel-> add/remove programs only shows ONE of the divX codecs..is this common ??

Not all AVI's use a DivX codec for video.. Also if the file is corrupt or incomplete, the wmp won't play it. You could try rebuilding the AVI header with something like divfix and see if that helps.
