View Full Version : "Disk Read Error" on boot up [Advent Laptop; 6410; winXP]

About five seconds after i boot up i get an error message: "There wwas a disk read error - press ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart"

This has happened every time i have started up

After asking a friend what to do he told me to use the xp cdrom to boot up, go to the 'r' for recovery area, and eventually run 'chkdsk'. I did this and it said that the volume seemed to be ok so it wasnt checked, i checked it anway - 'chkdsk /p'. The check got up to 10% completion and i heard the most unhealthy noises coming from inside the laptop. It didnt sound happy, like it was scratching or stuggling with somthing. I left it for a bit but it never got past 10% and the noises kept occurring

Any ideas on what i should do, if there is anything, would be very useful

Thanks a lot

It sounds like the hard drive is broken or is breaking.

If it was broken and i got a replacement - would it be possible to salvage stuff from the old one???

Possibly, it would depend on how broken it was.
