I have 4 Yamaha's and never had a problem with any of them. I'm about to purchase my 5th.
I have the Yamy CRW3200 IDE at work and I love it. I'm going to get the SCSI version for home.

Pretty sure that the Sony is based on a lite-on so it should be OK. Though I have always been a bit of a Yamaha fan. The Yamha is only 24x, however it is the fastest 24x so it probably isn't that much slower.
It really depends on what you are planing to use it for.

Well, that drive is worth $150 here, which I guess is around 130 CAD. However I have no idea what stuff is worth in Canada.
If you are copying PC games, then lite-on is the way to go, also the drive can be firmware upgraded to write at 48X, however do so at your own risk.
The Yamaha is probably the best for audio.. quality wise anyway.
Anyway, I'm moving this to consumer's opinion.

Neither, go with TDK or Plextor.

Go to newegg.com and foam at the mouth. The TEAC is my new favorite for the minute. Most of the rebagged stuff is liteon these days. Teac makes their own stuff as well as yamaha. You have a great warranty at new egg so it really doesn't matter. Get the cheapest with software.
