I need advice. I have been burning back ups for some friends and aquaintences. Mp3's SVCD's VCD's etc. My DVD reader has gone down and is not recognising cdr and cdrw when it is placed into the drive.
The message it comes up with is Please insert disk into Drive E.
I am convinced this is a hardware problem and not a software problem.

My p.c is still under Gaurentee from Currys but they will not send an engineer out until i try uninstalling and reinstalling the system. The last time i did this i lost loads of stuff and i dont want to have to do it again.


A couple of questions.

1, If i tell them ive reinstalled the system when i haven't will they be able to tell? If so is there anyway i can stop them from being able to tell?

2, If i end up taking it into the shop how do i prevent them from seeing what ive been burning?

3, Why did i buy the bloody thing from there in the first place?

As you can probably tell i dont know much about how pc's work so any help would be great.

1.) Yes they probably can tell because of the dates on the files (windows files)

2.) They can't see what you have burned.

3.) Beats me.


I don't see how re-installing Windows would fix it. If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work.

Just to be sure you could always put it in another pc to test it.

1. Very unlikely, most of their staff aren't even trained and its not a common task even for the trained ... though as roger says its not hard to read the dates.
2. You can password protect them (assuming you are talking about the files on your hard drive (otherwise the flippant answer is "don't give them the cd's ..), have a look here gary glitter should have used this (http://www.softstack.com/)
3. Because you wanted the piece of mind afforded you by a warranty and the astounding after sales service :D

Thanks guys. Im gonna give them a ring and get stroppy. See where we go from there.
