my mates computer always asks for the boot disc every time he starts up the computer .he has already rebooted it to see if that helped but no.he put a new cdrewriter in two weeks ago it was working great but now it,s not could that have anyhting to do with it.

What Error message in exact word does it display...??
I guess the PC cant detect you HDD, nor you CDRW, or other IDE drives, so it comes up with insert boot disk, check you cables, IDE device jumpers, bios setting, and let us know how you get on.

also make sure he has'nt got a floppy disk inserted ( lol )

Sounds to me as though the boot record or the system files held on the hard drive have become corrupt or have been deleted.. you could try this, boot from the boot disk, hold down the F8 key to boot the the menu system (Win95/98 assumed) at the menu choose command prompt only. at the A:/ prompt type sys c: this should transfer the system files from the floppy onto the hard disk and hopefully resolve your M8s problem
