I am in the USA and I am about to get cable internet when my cable company starts to offer it soon. But my question is, how fast is your connection and what kind of connection do you have?
Also I have a few questions my cable company will offer three plans, the three are:
Bronze - UL:128 Kbps DL:384 Kbps - $25/month
Silver - UL:128 Kbps DL:1,024 Kbps - $35/month
Gold - UL:256 Kbps DL:2,048 Kbps - $40/month
I am probably going to get Gold since it is only $5 more than Silver is is 2x faster. Which do you think I should get? What will be my average speed (in KB)?
I am mainly interested in downloading VCDs and such, probably of WinMX, IRC, and DirectConnect. I will download from the newsgroups for speed if there are any good newsgroups available. Just FYI.
BTW how many Kb are in a KB?
Thanks for your help.

I wish I sould get 100K, never mind "2,048"!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go for the max I say!

I've been working on a customers PC all day (He had Klez real bad! LOL Wipe the HDD BAD! :D ) who had a ADSL cable line. After loading all his XP updates on for him and coming home to be on a 56K all night I'm worse than suicidal right now!

I just sat there looking at the screen watching the bar green with envy hating him more by the second!........and that was only a 512mb line!

I hate broadband users!

I would go for gold because it will be worth it if you're downloading VCDs and stuff... ;)

for you people that download large files (lets say about 500MB) from other users with a program like WinMX or IRC, how fast is the DL and about how long would that take to DL a 500MB file?

Ohh Lazza, I feel your pain, I am on a 56K that acts like it is a 28.8k, which really pisses me off. There is also another plan, The "Platinum plan" which is UL:512 Kbps DL:3,096 Kbps. But I can't afford it, that is why I didnt mention it in the above post. It's $70/month!

40$ us What?! In canada that's what I pay with the taxs...Anyway, I'd recommend you the bronze one. If you look money wise, it's the best. Of course I'm a cheap guy with no job :(

For your question about the time for 500mb, well it depends where you d/l from. On irc it depends on the servers and on winmx it depends fron who you d/l. Hope it helps.

Yeah its $40 US. When downloading off of IRC, which has an average max of 128 Kbps (i believe), how long would it take to DL 500MB?

1024kbps = 128 KB/sec approximately 420 mb in an hour , you will only get this in ideal conditions though. Check if your isp has a news server, you should get the max d/l speed as you are downloading from your isp. Once you have got used to news groups you will not want to waste your time on file sharing programmes/irc

If you are mainly using p2p apps to download (like WinMX) then there is not much point having a super fast connection as you will be limited by the upload rate of the other end.

8 bits in a byte, 1,024 bytes in a k, 1,024k in a mb

Cable by nature can't guarantee speeds. If you go gold keep an eye on the actual speed at different times that you receive. Go to DSLreports.com for tests.
