I've been defragging about once a week now & was just wondering what effect this would have on my hard drive. ie can it cause any damage or wear & tear from constantly being defragged. Thanks for any replys

I suppose that all use produces wear. A hard drive has a lot of moving parts, and the heads move a lot when you defrag it.
On the other hand, if your drive is not defragged, your files will be scattered all over the drive, and the drive will have to move the heads a lot.
On the bottom line: I would not worry too much about it. :)
If you have enough free space on your drive, it becomes less fragmented, and you do not have to do it as often as once a week.
Once each month seems enough for me.
