Hi guyz.
I recently Re Formated my computer and when i try 2 put on my modem driver again it just says "couldnt find file" again & again. I tried all the directories on the cd but it cant find it !
So i tried using the Standard 56KB modem driver with it. No luck there (i think) just when a try to dial up it says "Check ur modem is properly inserted & connected 2 the phone line" (which it is).
So yeh...modem driver for it cant be found on the cd it came wid ??
anyway i think its a SM56 Speakerphone modem aye.
Even when i go to the diagnosis tab in "modems" in says "CANNOT OPEN PORT" ??
anyway im in a mess so any ideas would be great.
If u need any more info i'll try to giv it to u asap.
thanks heaps ppl.

The SM56, I think its a Motorola software model, the drivers for these if I remember correctly, are a bunch of loose files + a SETUP program, but its been like 3 years since I last had my hands on one, so I am really just guessing right now.

The reason you can open the modem port is because without the driver, Windows cant even see your modem in its true form, its just another unknown device and have no way of talking to it.

I use the sm56. If you do a search on google, it will throw up a bunch off sites where you can download from.
The best of which is this one

Do it!

Hello

i have the same modem and it as said above does have a setup program on the disk. but if yours does not, you can cancel the setup when windows tries to find a driver on the disk. then use the add new hardware and select modem then have disk and direct it to the folder on the cd with the modem driver in it. this has worked for me on a few occasions when windows would not find the driver on the cd even though i knew it was there.

Try taking the modem out, then install drivers (as sammy says), put modem back in and reboot , should then say found new hardware .. installing drivers. This usually works. 98se expects a modem to be external and connected to com port, installing drivers first gets round this.
