I am wanting to save me rar files on cd's so then i have more room on me hard drive. When the files are on the pc i can extract them to an iso and they work fine. When i copy them on a cd and then copy them back on to the pc and extract them they dont work. Why is this happening. I get an error message from Winrar saying mismatched files or somet when clearly they worked before.

Cheers

Are you getting CRC mismatch errors? If so then your RAR files got corrupted either in the burn process or when copying from the CD back to the hard drive. If you still have the SFV you can check them to see which files are corrupt. If you do have corrupt files the only way to fix them would be to either replace them or use PAR files to restore them.

if your getting a crc error and thats all, use winace. i use it all the time with crc errors. it will still extract the file but at the end will say, crc errors occured, would you like to delete your file. i always hit no and burn. havent had any problems with the games i've done this with. this is just my suggestion though, will not be held responsible if a game freezes while your playing or something

Whenever I have stored rars onto a CD then copied back to the hard drive, they become converted to "read only" files (This is likely the default configuration)

If in your windows setup you won't allow these files to be altered, then that may be the source of your errors.

Try right clicking on a file that is coming up with a crc error, and look at its properties. Unclick "read only" then try again.

Also, make sure you are running winrar v3.00

I have just cheked the files properties and nothing was selected when transfered from cd to hd. So i have chosen Archive and it still dont work. The thing is, when i copy these i send them to me m8 and he gets the same message as i do on his machine. We are both running Winrar 3 lol

Also when i clicked on the properties of the files on the cd, they where selected as read only. Should this be ok as u said they shouldnt be read only but they are on the cd.

Cheers for all the help ;)

read only after being burned seems to be a normal thing because theres no way you can alter anything on a permanent disc. the problem has to lie within the burn process. it could have been you burned them too fast from your hard drive to cd and caused the smallest of error to occur. crc usually arent a fatal problem, if it was then the file wouldnt complete extracting, it would halt where the crc occurs. try the winace step, if it works fine after burning, then just put a note for yourself on the disk with the rar files that reads, "only unrar with winace" or something along those lines.

If you say they are OK on the disc, but not when you transfer them back to your hard drive, then just try extracting them while still on the CD... there's no need to put them back on the hd before extraction.

Well i copied them onto a cdrw just now at 4x speed and changed the names of them so computer dont think they are rar files. Then transfered the files over and opened with Winrar and Winace and they still dont work. I cant copy the iso cos they are to big and dont have a dvd writer lol

Il try again and see what happens

Cheers for help
