Offically NO but it can play them.. same goes for CDR.. its VERY picky though.

Its all to do with the EPROM chip if you don't have the correct version then it will not play any dvdr do a search in this forum as there is a guy who will sned you the chip for £15 I think.

It's all to do with the laser and the varying coercity ,reflectance and absorption of the DVD-R you use ( how well the surface reflects the laser and how much isn't) the sammy use a cheap and cheerful laser and isn't very good ans steadily gets worse (personal experience) needs to be third gen disks ,Neo or FWS

I can confirm that it is down to the eprom chip because I have a samy 709 and I tried every brand of media from top quality verbs to the unbranded and none of them would play until I had the eprom chip changed. Safe bet to say its the eprom. Presumably the last in the line fo the 709s had the new eprom chip as standard.
Also if it were down to the laser then why did the matrix not originally play until you had the new eprom chip installed ?

i have had a sammy 709 when their first came out , i have not had anything
done to it, i did a remote hack when i found it, a few years ago

and the following cdrs do work on it
sirius cdrs
superior cdrs

dvdrs
fws 2nd gen
verbs
