Instructions on the Pioneer site.. But if you don't know why, then you probably have no reason to update.

The idea of a firmware update is to solve problems, if you aren't having any, then you really don't need to update.

Thanks m8. i was just wondering, as im getting a few returns on the dvdrs im doing. they are apparently starting in the middle, jumping and going blocky. mostly they work fine on most players all dvd drives, some ps2's and they all work on my sony standalone. i was just wondering if the firmware could affect this as its even happening with generation 3's.

mine was doing the same but it was the blanks that was doing it switched to fws 3rd gen ok now

I updated using pioneer update (1.80) also now use prassi, had 100% success since however I think its been the switch to the 'better' burning software that solved most of my issues.
