Webgator Jun 21, 2002, 10:59 AM  Installing CD-Rom driver
Well, I'm working on a Compaq Deskpro 5120 system & put myself in a pickle I formatted the HD on one of them & thought I copied Sys files but when I tried to install Win98 via CD-ROM the system didn't detect the drivers for it, so trying to be as cheap as I can be I located the driver for this Matsushita(panasonic)1995 CD-ROM.
The trouble I'm having is that how do you install an exe file via DOS so that I can use this. As I found out earlier that the deskpro5220 has a very limited BIOS setup so I can't even set it to auto detect. I can't access config.sys but I can run autoexec.Bat but that only takes me back to a C:>,What path do I take to install 56xwin95.exe when the program only has a readme.txt(which is dir for installing via device manager, and a .INF file & a .MPD file.
Anyway I'm at a loss with this. I've tried different drives none of them are very new, but they are known working drives.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Van Nugent Jun 21, 2002, 11:26 AM I'm lost with your post, too. Don't understand all that you said.
Now you want to install Win98. You do not need to install driver for CDROM when running Win98 and later Windows versions. Windows will use the generic driver for it.
Get a Win98 bootdisk here (www.bootdisk.com). Rename autoexec.bat to autoexec.old and config.sys to config.old. Reboot your system with the bootdisk. Your CD drive will be recognized and you'll be able to install Windows from it.
Webgator Jun 21, 2002, 12:48 PM I have a boot disk for win98 but the drivers are not detected for the cd-rom & I downloaded the cd-rom driver but it doesn't have an install option with it so it's just an .exe file,I understand I have to run mscdex, exe first then command lines after that but what command lines do I enter?
I cannot accesss config.sys.
The Compaq Bios is very different from anything I ever seen before ie:very little op. for changing systems setup.
If I can include anything else please ask.
Van Nugent Jun 21, 2002, 06:04 PM Have you tried booting up with Win98 bootdisk as I said above to see if you can have access to the CD drive? If you do have access to the CDROM, rename autoexec.bat & config.sys then install Windows 98 from the CDROM.
You may need to download WinME bootdisk from the link I gave you above since it has better CDROM supports than the Win98 bootdisk.
Is your CDROM connected to the CDROM port on the soundcard or is it connected to 1 of the IDE channels on the motherboard?
Webgator Jun 22, 2002, 09:51 AM I've tried booting from my 98se boot disk with no luck whats so ever.I'll download a ME disk & see if that works,The CDROM is connected to the sound card,I tried hooking it up to the MoBo but then the monitor wouldn't come on with that setup so I pluged it back in to the sound card.
I'll let you know if the ME bootdisk works.
Thanks for help.
Van Nugent Jun 22, 2002, 09:56 AM Now I see. The reason I asked whether or not the CD drive is connected to the soundcard is old CD drives normally are connected to the soundcard's CD port and therefore you can't have access on the CD drive by using a bootdisk.
Look at the back of the CDROM, do you see any jumper settings labeled Master (MA), Slave (SL), Cable Selected (CS)?
Webgator Jun 22, 2002, 10:31 AM Yes there is 8 pins for jumpers, the other drives I have for the same type of computer have only 6 pins and there set for master, this drive hasn't any jumpers set.
As you must already know the ME boot disk didn't work:(which jumper should be set for CDROM to boot from disk?
Webgator Jun 22, 2002, 10:40 AM BTW: I forgot to add the jumpers on the drive are not labeled,I've got a feeling we are making progress(I hope) :)
Van Nugent Jun 22, 2002, 10:46 AM Well, since I can't physically touch your hardware , I only rely on the info you provided so please give me as much as you can. If I knew the fact that the CDROM is connected to the soundcard, we could save some posts. :)
Anyway, can you possibly get the model # of the drive? Since this is an old drive and it's got no label for jumper settings there is no way of telling how to set it correctly.
Webgator Jun 22, 2002, 10:55 AM Well on the back of the CDROM above the jumpers it's lined up left to right 0-1-2-3 above the pins,The Drive itself is a Matsushita-Kotobuki (pre-panisonic era I guess ) Model #cr-563-B Date of Manufacture May of 94.
Van Nugent Jun 22, 2002, 10:58 AM Give me a little time since this is an old drive. Let me see if I can get the pin info for it.
Webgator Jun 22, 2002, 11:00 AM Thank you very much :)
Van Nugent Jun 22, 2002, 11:18 AM The CDROM will NOT work without being connected to the soundcard. You must install the soundcard driver first and then install the CDROM driver so that the soundcard driver will appear in config.sys before the CDROM driver. What driver setup files do you have? Do you have the drivers for both soundcard & CDROM?
Webgator Jun 22, 2002, 12:00 PM I've got the driver for the CDROM but not the sound card the only thing I can give you is a number that was on the underside of the card.
AZSC44037879 it also had a couple of Packard Bell chips installed on the card dont know if thats any help or not,It's starting to sound hopeless again isn't it.
The two drivers I found for the CDROM are both from different locations the first one I got from Driversguide.com was 56x-9x1.exe & the other one from panisonic was 56xwin95.exe.
Van Nugent Jun 22, 2002, 06:41 PM Try looking for the souncard drivers on www.driverguide.com .
Webgator Jun 22, 2002, 07:43 PM I found the drivers for the sound card, could you advice as how to install them,I extracted all files from zip & the read me didn't give instuctions.
Van Nugent Jun 22, 2002, 07:47 PM I need to look at what files it has. Can you give me the link where you downloaded the driver. I need to download it and take a look.
The same thing goes for the driver of the CDROM.
Webgator Jun 22, 2002, 08:04 PM Heres the Sound driver info.
http://www2.driverguide.com/uploads/uploads9/6865.html
I'll have to backtrack to locate the CDROM driver.
Shouldn't take me too long.
Again Thanks :)
Van Nugent Jun 22, 2002, 08:20 PM OK, I just downloaded the sound driver. Please click on Control Panel/System then in the Device Manager tab, do you see any item labeled "Sound, Video and Game Controllers"? If you see it, click on the + sign next to it to expand the branch. Tell me all the items listed under it and do you see any yellow ! next to any one of them?
Webgator Jun 22, 2002, 08:23 PM This the information for the CDROM Driver With link.

I don't have an OS loaded, this is a formated HD that I didn't copy my sys files correctly when I formatted :(
Van Nugent Jun 22, 2002, 08:36 PM Sorry! Silly me. Because I looked at the driver and this is for Win. Can you download the DOS driver?
Webgator Jun 22, 2002, 08:43 PM That's ok :) I'm about to lose my cookies over this lol,OK I downloaded the DOS version 56x dos.exe

Webgator Jun 23, 2002, 10:04 AM Van,I've looked everywhere & I can't find dos drivers for this #$%^ Sound card any idea on where else I could look???
Van Nugent Jun 23, 2002, 01:41 PM I can't help you because I don't even know its make/model.
Webgator Jun 23, 2002, 01:51 PM Well the soundcard driver I have does work with DOS because it sets up the sound card then searchs for the Panisonic CDROM to add to soundblaster 16 & also soundblaster Pro but it also has an option to input my own port settings.
It can't find the CDROM in the first 2 settings so I guess I'll have to find out how to input the address,I think it's either Com1 or 4.
Thanks for help.
