lexx Jun 23, 2002, 07:47 AM Hello everyone,it`s been a long time,
Right then here we go.When I start my PC it gives a continuous beep for about 3 secs, then it sort of makes a dialing noise, you know like a modem trying to connect is the best way I can explain it.The only thing is I don`t have a dial up modem in my PC,then after about 10 secs it just seems to idle away and the monitor is not receiving a signal from it,after 20secs of idling if I press the restart button and not the on/off button it starts as normal.
P3 450MHz CPU
Voodoo 2 3000 AGPx2 video card
PC128 sound
Elitegroup P6BAT-A+ MOBO
128 MB SDRAM
40x CD ROM

Surf Board 4100 Cable modem
Netgear network card
any help would be much appreciated
Thanks, lexx.
snooper_uk Jun 23, 2002, 08:02 AM maybe you have a hidden dialer and when you turn your computer on it tries to dial the number but because you have a cable modem it cant do it.
you could try a full system scan with a trojan/virus checker type application which would sort the problem.
that might not be the problem though, i'm no expert but that seems the logical problem.
lexx Jun 23, 2002, 12:39 PM Thanks snooper_uk,
I did a search and found a folder called "Dialler program" it had 2 .exe programs in it and the icons for these programs were an eye, wierd, properties says it was d/loaded last october, but why would I d/load a dialler when I have had broadband for alot longer than last october?...I have switched the PC off completely and turned it back on again with no problems after deleting the dialler,I am hoping it will start from cold though,I will soon find out tomorrow.I can`t turn it off for a while yet,I am too busy with college stuff.
Thanks again snooper_uk
snooper_uk Jun 23, 2002, 02:31 PM no problem mate, I like to think I do my bit on these forums.
ElaineM Jun 24, 2002, 01:34 AM Lexx, long time no see, and yes I'm still here.
If you still have problems you might want to have a look HERE (http://www.cdrom-guide.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=123294&highlight=dialer).
lexx Jun 25, 2002, 04:55 AM HI ElaineM,
It`s been a long time,I have spent the last year at college doing a HNC in Electrical/Electronic Engineering. This first year ends next week so I will be looking forward to the break before the second year starts in September.
Anyway,I d/loaded Ad-Aware and deleted 37 suspicious components, but I won`t know if it worked until tomorrow. The thing is When I start my PC it starts up ok but it makes a few buzzing and whizzing noises that it shouldn`t be making and doesn`t send a signal to the monitor so the monitor doesn`t come on,it`s only after a few seconds after the tower has settled down, so to speak, that I can start it properly but only by pressing restart and not the on/off button. When it starts working after all the initial messing around I can power it off completely the start it up with on/off button and it will start no problem,it`s only when I leave it for a few hours (overnight) that the problems start again.
Thanks,...lexx
lexx Jun 26, 2002, 03:35 AM well ElaineM,
That worked, thanks for putting me onto AdAware, thanks also to snooper_uk , it was obviously a hidden dialler.
Thanks again ppl.
lexx Sep 28, 2002, 05:16 PM Hi all,
well I still have the same problem,I think the solutions I had been given,as much as they were appreciated, were just a coincidence in curing the problem,it stopped working again 2 days later :( I have noticed that the fan on my processor isn't working could that be causing my PC problem.:zombie:
ps2wiz Sep 28, 2002, 07:37 PM It might be your motherboard sending a code, which translates into something being wrong with the motherbaord. Maybe its telling you that the fan isn't working? look at you motherboard manual and see if you can find something.
gattman Sep 28, 2002, 08:04 PM A continuos long beep usually means there is a memory problem.
Check your motherboard manual for error beep codes.
jasev Sep 29, 2002, 01:00 AM either clean or replace your cpu fan as you'll end up with a dead cpu before long, the long beep sounds like your graphics card isn't in the slot properly or if you've recently changed or removed the graphics card for any reason then check that when you replaced it you didn't use any extra pressure and the back of the motherboard istouching the case and causing a short.
if you have an agp card and a pci hardware mpeg card or any form of a 2 graphic card system then in the bios set the main graphics card correctly using the init display option in the bios.
hope it helps.
ashe589 Sep 29, 2002, 01:18 AM I would suggest opening up your computer and refitt all the components. Take everything out clean it up make sure theres no dust make it look like new. And put everything back securely. Then turn it on and see what happens.....
lexx Oct 09, 2002, 11:58 PM Hi all,
according to the award bios website it is likely to be the graphics card,or more specifically the memory on the card,I have hot air pencilled all the rams in work and re-soldered a few suspicious looking joints,if that doesn't work then I will try one of the 3 graphics cards friends have loaned me.
lexx Oct 22, 2002, 06:33 PM I ended up replacing the motherboard and processor, borrowed them from a friend until I get my own.It all works fine now.
Thanks for all your help.
ElaineM Oct 23, 2002, 05:09 AM Glad to hear that it's finally sorted. Don't be a stranger... :)
