i wish to connect 2 pcs with the intention of shareing one broadband connection

1 one pc has win xp prof and the other has win98se - will this work

2 i wish to run the broadband modem via a network card on the xp pc - do i need 2 network cards in this machine

3 the distance between these pcs is approx 10mtrs, if i am not using a hub, i understand i need a twisted cable to connect both pcs, is this correct and where is the best place to obtain one.

any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated

many thanks

1) You will need to use your XP cd to setup home networking and ICS(internet connection sharing) on the 98 machine.

2) Yes you will need two network cards in the Xp machine.

3) The network Cable (CAT5) should always be "twisted pair" (refers to how the individual wires lay inside the wider insulation [twisted in pairs])but you need it to be a crossover cable since there will be no hub or switch in between the computers.

hope this helps

Oh yeah you can pick up the cables at almost any computer store these days

thanks m8 - that has answered my questions, one more thing is there any benefit from using a hub/switching unit as opposed to straight cable connection
once again many thanks

A hub or switch is only needed when you get more then 2 PC's
in that case all pc's (3 or more, a hub/switch for 2 is pointless) would only need one network card and they would connect from the network card to the hub/switch with a straight rather then crossover cable
