hush Jun 25, 2002, 09:05 AM Hi,
I've just put XP pro on my machine and the cd writer (a philips CDD4401/31) does not want to know.
I can't find any drivers for it and the upgrade on Easy CD Creater Platinum did not solve any problems.
Does my cd writer go under a different name. I have seen one site calling it a "PCRW404" Is this right?
Philips are about as helpful as a helicopter ejector seat!!
Also, what does the "/31" mean?? Other people have got "/71" does it matter? I don't want to download the wrong driver or firmware.
Please someone help if you can. I am slowly going mad!!!
:furious:
Regards,
Jason
merlin_the_magician Jun 25, 2002, 10:36 AM Strange... XP should definately recognize this drive.
Anyway, "PCRW404" does not sound very likely... Philips drives are called CDD#### or CRW#### (in which the first 2 digits call the writing speed, 3rd and 4th usually are rewriting speed, altough 01 seems not very likely here :D )
To get it working right, maybe try a firmware update?
Get an update at www.download.com or www.driverguide.com
If you still do not succeed in getting it to work, you might want to try control panel>system>hardware.
Remove the drive here and reboot your pc. XP should recoginse the drive now.
hush Jun 25, 2002, 10:55 AM I can't find anything for this cdr...I have a firmware upgrade for it but it is for the cdd4401/71??? Is it the same? The philips site thinks that my seriel code is a toaster!!!

hush Jun 27, 2002, 05:25 AM I have managed to get the writer working with Adaptec EZCD creater platinum and Nero 5.
It said on the roxio website that the philips cd writer I have wasn't supported at all....funny that it worked in win98 before.
I installed Goldenhawk's CDRWIN 3.8g which also installed some ASPI files. I ran CDRWIN and the recorder was found so next I reinstalled EZCD creater and the recorder was on there too. Direct CD works aswell.
XP says in the hardware listings that the philips is a rewriter and states the speeds although it is manufactured by "CDROM". I'm not too bothered about not having the writer for use directly with windows as I always use other software.
Thanks for your help. I'l download the firmware for it.
Philips finally managed to email me and said that it isn't one of there CDwriters..It is an OEM. The original bit of paper I found said it was made by traxdata, when I typed in the serial code found on the cage of the writer it came up with philips. Oh well... C'est La vie!!!

Are you sure it IS a writer, try putting some bread in it LOL :D :D
hush Jun 28, 2002, 08:21 AM better still,
search under the UK site and its a Mens shaving kit.
WOW Philips make some useful multi functional cd writers!!
moparman Jul 20, 2002, 04:36 AM What happened to the link for the Philips firmware? It's not complete anymore. I have a 4401/71 4x4x24 and have the same troubles. XP doesn't see it as a CDRW. Trying to figure it out but I am new to this burning.
hush Jul 22, 2002, 03:34 AM moparman,
I've had this trouble with all my cd writers in XP...It thinks they are standard CDROMs. They way I got around it was to install something like Goldenhawks CDRWIN, which comes with Aspi layers (files that help the cdrw talk to the computer) After that I installed programs like Nero and Adaptec's EZ CD creater, which all worked fine.
When I tried to install Adaptec before it said that my drive wasn't supported, even after installing the upgrade kits for XP. Basically it was all a load of bollocks because the programs worked fine in win2000.
Try to find CDRWIN is a good start, but I'm unsure on how to tell XP that it is a CDRW rather than a CDROM.
Hush.
