has anyone seen this?
It was in last weeks Daily Telegraph

the basic jist of it is this-BT have suspended work on exchange upgrades to broadband-however BT will upgrade any local exchange to
handle broadband internet...if there is proof of demand to
justify the cost -£200,000-£500,000 per exchange.

BT want would be customers to register on a website they are
setting up to test demand-they say that between 200 and 500
registrations will be needed before they upgrade an exchange.

I wonder if it would be possible for everyone here to register interest in everyone elses exchange to get it-seriously doubt that!!!!LOL-would
be a good one though.....

BT to map broadband demand
By Tim Richardson
Posted: 18/06/2002 at 11:00 GMT

BT is to create a nation-wide database to map demand for broadband in the UK.

The monster telco wants punters and businesses to register their interest in receiving ADSL.

If enough people in each area are prepared to subscribe to ADSL - then BT will go-ahead and upgrade exchanges for broadband.

BT claims the database will create a "true barometer of demand" in areas where it claims that, up until now, it has not been commercially viable to upgrade to broadband.

Said BT Wholesale chief exec Paul Reynolds: "People have been claiming that there is sufficient demand for broadband in their areas if only they had a way to channel their interest to us. Now we have created just such a scheme.

"Businesses and consumers can register their interest with service providers who will record it on the broadband registration database.

"The demand and the target levels will be clearly visible to all and will help individuals, communities, local authorities and service providers to have a direct impact on broadband roll out."

BT Wholesale's broadband database will go live on July 1. It will also publish the threshold at which the level of demand makes individual exchanges commercially viable for broadband upgrade.

Depending on the exchange, thresholds range from 200 to 500 user registrations. ®

Perhaps if they brought the price down to realistic levels then there would be some interest.

I currently pay £15.99 a month for a reasonable dial-up service from BT and I don't see the point of paying £29.99 a month for quicker downloads.

However, if the price was £20 per month, I'd be interested.

as a "country bumpkin type" that has only recently got water (so the suits think!) i've been told that my local exchange is not likely to be upgraded in my lifetime! but i should carry on paying my bill to those nice people at bt for my s**t little 56k modem!

why is it that other EU countries whom are allegedly less well off than the UK have had broadband for years and will no doubt shortly be moving on to even faster systems before the idiots that run our "blue chips" can get their a**e in gear?

unfortunately in back of beyond avenue where i live we'll be lucky to get 20/50 people to register an interest for broadband never mind 200/500. It's therefore a shame we can't all somehow get together and bump each others numbers up on the bt website? Surely though postcodes will be required and bt are so on the ball they'd spot this a mile off??

i'd better leave it at that because i think the rubber band on my modem needs re charging!

Don't think it's even being released until July 1st Roger when it goes live.

But I'm sure the URL will be on www.theregister.co.uk/ as soon as they have it, thankfuly for us they LOVE to knock BT every chance they get. And rightly so for us the consumer.

The area where I used to live is running a campaign to get BT to uprgade the local exchange. Apparently they already have 150 interested people.

BTW You can't get cable in this area either.

well just so's you all know there is something new that's coming for those of you that can't get cable or DSL. I'll try and find a link, but it's an adaptaion of 802.11B and can broadcast thru an antenna up to 20 miles away.
2 blokes here in the states cooked this thing up in their garage and are now being offered millions by investors interested in deploying it! It's called EtherLinx and here's a story I found on it.
