well 007 went in on behalf of the british empire (ofcourse they claim to have no knowledge of him) and he stole the only schematics of the xbox from bill gates personal computer files, gave it to some japanese men in the embassy basement..and voila we have a working chip!

but really they just basically found a way to crack it,i believe it had to do with the bios?

They just suck out the coding, study it & then write a new way around it. Some guys like
doing that just for fun.

I suppose you missed the post about Bunny, he did it, search the board for 'bunny'....the xbox hacker

Not to split hairs but its "bunnie". He may need that for the search to work out.

there's alwyas chips coming out for everything, it just happens, people hack the system, and thus modchips are born :) or in the case of DC you didnt even need a modchip

It just seems a bit funny to me that within a few weeks of the price drop here in England, a mod chip was starting to knock around?

Was there an initial leak from Microsoft on how to circumvent the protection on their console?

the only way they did it was to take the xbox games dev kit and hack
or copy the xbox bois chip as all dv kit would boot up none xbox games
for testing purpose of there games when making them for the xbox

some where along the line someone just happen to get one of these
dev kit of the xbox and this is how they did it

hence it was copywrited coding of the program by microsoft
so they had to shut down as breaking the law

i got to say they have come down in prices the modchips now
but well worth the money for sure

"An interesting anecdote, btw, is that when Microsoft came by MIT to give the X-BOX/recruiting presentation to the students here, we asked the guy (I forget his name, but he was important--I do recall he claimed to help define the DHCP spec :-P) if they had any plans on making it tough to hack the boxes and run linux. They dude looked honestly surprised and it hadn't even crossed his mind. This was about six months or so before the X-BOX launch. There's some commentary at the bottom of this page on the legal aspects of reverse engineering."
