Just got broadband so of course am off downloading at the speed of light, trying irc for first time, thought I had struck gold. Did all the reading up so I knew what was going on, managed to get a TOP download going on, all going well. Download speed c.35kps Then all of a sudden it stops. No explanation, just stops. No resume nothing. Just 30 odd percent done. Tries again, all starts ok but with 58 mins and 40 odd percent still to go it packs up again. Am I missing something, how can I resume these, can I resume these?

I have tried asking on irc via the method suggested but I get an ignore message. It seems people aint so helpful on there so I come back to the kind people at cd rom  , any irc users got some tips for newbie, and does everywhere have full queues or am I looking in wrong place??

Sometimes the servers on IRC suddenly drop transfers or go really slow.
Probably has to do with flooding of the server. Fortunately, downloads can be resumed, but you will have to requeue.
Simply go to the options and in the DCC section, check auto-get file and resume if exists. And everywhere pretty much have full queues.

Not all fserves have resume enable though :(

Thats what I'm finding, I have enable auto-get but it just doesnt seem to bother, theres no way of finding out where you are in the queue other than after you have been put in.

So if i got this right, there are legit reasons why my download halts - drops below min speed requirement or as you say, server floods. If I rejoin same server, even if queueing, assuming resume is enabled it should pick up the part saved file and trot on?

yea servers tends to do that. try a different one. and btw, what cable company are you using? 35kps seems real slow for cable.

So, are you using fserves where you type their trigger then browse their stuff?? Cause if you are you can type "queues" to see which queue spot you are in. xdcc servers usually tell you what place you are in the queue when you request the file, if all send slots are taken.

I am new to irc too. I use the trigger to get on fserves... What is a "TOP" dl? What about those dl's that say send a msg requesting #5 to get the 5th item? Is there a way to search the contents of all fserves with out getting on each one manually?

Sorry I have so many questions. :(

Warren G: using adsl connection and I admit I thought 35kps was slow becuase I have regularly got knocking on double that elsewhere..

I'm new to IRC too.

The slow rate may be due to the connection at the other end as well as net traffic.
