Ive not used one, but from what ive seen they seem the normal budget stuff, like celerons and integrated graphics etc, so ok for general use i guess.
Remember tho, a 'budget PC' in PC World would probably get you a good mid level PC from a mail order retailer

To be honest i ahve only every heard bad things about PC froms dixons/Pc World/currys also the after sale service leaves a lot to be desired (same goes for time/tiny) so you might be better getting some local to build you a system, just my 2 pennys worth

get some one to build you a system, you'll get more for your money than one from a shop

imho
if they say they are budget then there must be a reason ie. bad or none upgradability, cheapest parts used etc. if you must go there then select one before hand with advice from friends or family or net (do your homework), take all sales patter with a pinch of salt, they know more about interest rates than internet rates, they also tell you what can go wrong with it before you get it out of the store, so keep away from their warranties regardless of what thay say.
then the good thing----the doors leading out of their stores.
much better to go to your local computer store, great advice, probably free labour warranty for life of your system, but not the cheapest prices saddly.

Hi If It's the £500 deal then I bought one for my lad last Monday.Came with a "Free"Slimline Scanner & Epson printer.
To be honest It is good value for money.Plays all the new games OK.
I also banged a "Vivistar"DVD Burner in.It runs like a dream.
Mine can't have been a Friday afternoon build.
Could of done with a decent set of speakers rather than the two
"Matchboxes" with holes in but apart from that I'm well pleased.

If your friend has little experience with computers and intends to use it only to do simple stuff (internet, word processing, etc) then a budget PC will (hopefully) not give him/her any problems. These budget PC's are built for people who have absolutely no clue about hardware and the inner workings of a computer. In addition, there's probably no chance of any kind of upgradability in the future.

In reality, you could probably build a better PC yourself with the cost of a budget PC. You'll just need to have some experience.
And anyone with experience with self-building computers will say that Budget PC's are crap.

Actually I have bought my son 2 Emachines, they don't use top of the line components, however I'll give you a brief description of the latest...

P4 T4150
Fic VC31 motherboard
P4 1.5 ghz
Seagate 40 gig drive
Samsumg CDRW
on board sound/lan/ via FIC MB
Nvidia TNT 32 meg vid

under 500 US dollars

While these aren't your top of the line components, for the money its a solid, Reliable system, Its easily upgraded as needed..... Have had no problems with it at all....

only gripe is lack of driver availability for the Fic MB for use with win 98..
