I have a Panasonic DVD RP91 which has a decoder for DTS and Dolby. Currently it is connected to an old Denon amplifier that is OK but does not have the digital input an the jack for the loudspeakers are those clips... Not a real jack... I hope you know what I mean.

I also have two normal Yamaha speakers that are nothing special at all and it sounds OK but I would like to upgrade.

Now, I DO NOT want to buy an entire package with amplifier and speakers included. And my amplifier I would like to have the the real jack for the speakers since I am planning on buying pretty good cable, not just threads.

I don't know it it makes big difference between a 2.1 system or a 5.1 but I think a 2.1 would be enough for me! I am planning to listen to music too and I am not a big fan of a lot of bass such as Cervin Wega speakers since I mainy listen to acoustic music.

The amplifier does not need to have the decoder built in either obviously since the DVD player already has that.

I am quite a fan of B&W speakers due to their Kevlan bass material which is very good.

Does anyone have any suggestion for me? What do I buy? Where do I look for it? I live in NYC. I understand price is important here, but let's say what is the cheapest high quality stuff I can get?

Thanks

Hoss is the person for this inquiry since it is definitely his forte. I'm sure he'll be about shortly. He's been a bit busy with work as of late.

The last thing I heard was that Rotel is supposed to be very good for recievers and that a Dolbe/DTS decoder is worth buying even if it's on the DVD since the next DVD may not have it. Plus the fact that the chip is usually not as good as the one in the good recievers. This was talking to Innovative Audio here in NY and they seem to be pretty good at these things but expensive which is the problem... Anyway, still waiting for you Hoss and so is the beer and the shot of Jack! :round:

Is it possible for the moderators to move this question to a forum where Hoss is more active? Elaine wrote that this was his thing, but he is apparently pretty busy. I don't know if Audio would be the right forum... And since I'm not allowed to double post I prefer to kindly ask you, the moderators to do me this favor.

Thanks,

St

I have always prefered Yamaha as their digital technology and decoding is superb. Depending on what you are wanting to spend you can find some deals on yahoo shopping. For $500-$700 you can get a sweet amp with Dolby Digital 2 and the works. Or, you can go with their flagship model for around $2500. Their internal amps are very clean as well with a very low THD. For speakers, M&K make a great THX certified set for around 2500 bones. Best of luck....

And what about Rotel that I was recommended? And I have also thought about Denon... as for reviever!! Loudspeakers I am pretty sure I will end up with B&W... They are cheaper than the ones you mention, but I think I like them more... I'll have to listen to the M&K though. But that is a lot of money...

I have never listened to a Rotel, so I cannot comment on the quality of the amp. Denon as you mentioned is a good choice as well. Yes, the M & K are expensive for a 5 speaker set, but THX certified speakers will cost you....B&W is also a fine speaker but I think they are more geared for audio vs home theater.

Thanks, the thing is that I will use them for both (the loudspeakers). I will listen to CD's, Audio CD's, and watch DVD's and so on. So I am in need for something that is able to keep up with all of it, if that is possible...

Well Rotel have always made good stuff but so does Denon I don't think you can go wrong with either
I did find a nice Sterio review site once.. lets see..
http://www.audioreview.com/reviewscrx.aspx I think that's the one

Personally for speakers I'm a big fan of Klipsch and Paradigm & Polk aren't bad either. But if you can find a dealer near you DO go listen to the Klipsch speakers once you won't be disapponted. :) :)

Hoss...what style! Nothing like the Klipsche horned tweaters. You will either love Klipsche or hate them. I have had two sets of 1.5's for years that were used as some of my first home theater speakers. I now use JBL. Not the cheap stuff but the high-end studio series. I am a big fan of their titanium tweaters.

Well I have the K-Horns myself (or Klipschorn for you rookies) :D circa 1974 which need a cross-over upgrade but still.
I've never heard a set of Klipsch I didn't like yet. I even heard a set of their bookshelf speakers years ago... KG1.2's or sumtin like that... that simply blew me away. I even checked to see if they were cheating with a sub hooked up with them :) Which they weren't
Gotta say I have not heard many of their newer systems except for the Promedia 4.1's for the PC, which are simply amazing!
But even the old Heresy's are a treat to listen to and the La Scala's are always a good choice.
The most amazing thing with Klipsch is just how efficient they really are. Hook them up to a low watt system and stand back and watch the floor shake. Hook them up to a Hi Watt Bi-Amp and watch the rafters shake! With highs that simply sizzle and are very life like.
