hi everyone,

i've got an old samsung 4x speed SCR-630 cd rom drive. I recently reinstalled everything on my computer and now my cd rom drive won't autoload cd's because i'm only running the DOS drivers for it. It used to autoload fine so it must be possible, i think i was just running a standard driver or something, but i've tried a few sony ones, and nothing seems to work.

i know you're thinking "why does it matter?", but for some reason the music program Reason only runs then the data CD autoloads.

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

cheers

Since the SCR-630 is an IDE and you're running Win98, you do not need to install the driver for it.

Anyway, if Windows recognizes the drive, go to Start/Settings/Control Panel. Click on System to open the System Properties box. Click on Device Manager tab then click on the + sign next to CDROM to expand it. Under CDROM you'll see the CDROM in question. Doubleclick on it to open its Properties setting box. Now click on the Settings tab, you'll see a small box labeled Auto Insert Notification. Put a checkmark in this box to enable it.

If Windows does NOT recognize the CD drive or if you have conflicts (you see yellow ! next to it in Device Manager) causing by the DOS driver you installed, you'll need to REM out or remove the lines that refer to the CD drive in AUTOEXEC.BAT & CONFIG.SYS. Reboot Windows to let Windows installed the proper driver for the CDROM.

thanks a lot for the help but i'm still having problems.

there is no cd-rom drive in Device manager, and when i try to install a standard sony one for example, it works, but doesn't seem to make any difference.
if i remove the lines from my autoexec and config.sys, windows doesn't sort it out for me, and then when i try to install a cd rom drive using control panel, it asks me to insert the win98 cd. but the drivers aren't loaded so it doesn't recognise the cd.

aaargh!

cheers for the help,

For Win98, you do not need to install the DOS driver and if you do, it will cause conflicts as Windows is trying to use the generic driver for it.

REM out all lines that refer to the drive is autoexec.bat & config.sys and if you see the CDROM drive in Device Manager, remove it then reboot to let Windows automatically detect the drive & install the driver for it.
