i've got this pc here which is now very sluggish and desperatly needs a makeover, the things i'm going to keep are my ATX case, graphics card, sound card, modem, floppy, dvd & my cdrw and thats it. so i need advice on what other bits i should buy and need, ie mother board, cpu, hard disk, fan, power supply and whatever else. any advice at all will be much appreciated on which models to buy of said items and have i missed anything out? thinking preferably about an AMD processor but will listen to all sugestions, but all of this has to be not really any more than £300
thanks alot in advance

the sound card i got is a basic creative labs one and graphics is a 32MB AGP Creative Labs (looking at changing these both in a few months) the cpu is a celeron 600, with a gigabyte GA-6VX7+ mobo (can only go up to a 800cpu i think) and really want to change these for something half decent, i know it's not that much money but what would be the best setup i can get for about £300 or maybe a bit more as i forgot about RAM (doh) and will probably need DDR as i got 256SD now. also looking to get a minimum of a 60g HD, what make? the ibm are quite cheap. i've heard alot of people talking about these motherboards "Asus A7V333 RAID (Socket A motherboard) (MB-010-AS)" any opinion on them, i aint a clue so what would you get? cheers

You cant go wrtong with an ASUS mainboard. They are my preferred choice but for £300 you will struggle to get decent other components to make use of the board.
For £350 all in delivered my choice would be:
Asus A7V333A Skt A KT333 Chip XP Ready Audio
AMD ATHLON-XP2000+Socket A 266MHz FSB Processor
Maxtor 740X Hard Disk 40GB UIDE133 8.5ms 7200rpm - OEM
Samsung PC2700 DDR 256mb PC333
Ebuyer 400 Watt PSU P4 Ready
Coolermaster DP5-6J31C Fan AMD Approved Upto XP & MP 2100
I would always pick a Maxtor over an IBM Hard drive .
The Cooler is a bit El Cheapo but it is approved for the job (I'd probably upgrade that.
You could cut costs by picking a 300W PSU which would still be fine, and picking PC100 Memory, also a 5400rpm Hard Disk would save a few gold nuggets.
Alternatively you could go for a cheaper ECS K7S5A Mainboard and really Up the Ante on the other components with the saving.

I got an MSI KT3 Ultra ARU board recently excellent board for the money comes with all the trimmings USB2.0, Bluetooth, Raid 133, 5.1 Sound onboard to name a few. Pay around £100 for this. Jumperless design very easy to set up including raid.
