Would this harddrive happen to be a Seagate Model ST38641A?

Just boot up dos run fdisk by typing fdisk or fdisc at the command prompt and extend the partition, or use software such as partition magic and extend the partition.

I think there needs to be like a sticky on this subject LOL! It gets asked about once every two days!! Or maybe people can use the search function

It's one thing if it's a new harddrive that simply wasn't partitioned correctly from the beginning. But when a drive suddenly goes from 8gig to 2gig then something else is usually wrong that Fdisk may not be able to fix.

The reason that I ask if it's a Seagate ST38641A is because I have not one but two of them that each contain a defective controller board. The drives were attached to a motherboard that malfunctioned. Both drives are stuck in >2gig limit mode and only new circuit boards can fix them. Fdisk or partition magic doesn't help since they only see the drive as 2gigs total.

Woah just run fdsisk, I had the drive Qwerty mentioned and fdisk sorted it.
Cant be certain its the exact same drive but it was a seagate with a similar serial number if not the one. It happened when I went from win 95 to win 98 It was a 10 Gig drive showing as 1.99G (fresh intall after a format) Just fdisk and resize. And as godfather mentioned make sure its on Fat 32

My old computer did that, it kept changing it's mind about how big the hard drive was. I think you're meant to do a scandisk on it but I never did because it took ages.

There's your answer, you have an 8Gb drive, 6Gb of which is unallocated.

Run Partition Magic again, create a partition for the unallocated space and format it. You can then leave it as another partition (eg D:drive) or merge it with your C: drive to have one 8Gb partition.
