I heard the xbox hard drive is only a 5400 rpm drive, so would it be better to upgrade to a 5400 80 gig drive, or a 7200 rpm drive?

I think a 7200 would get too hot. Don't know for sure though

id stick with a 5400rpm drive, im pretty sure that a 7200rpm would get too hot.

i know someone with a 7200rpm and they say it works fine its a 40 gig they installed

I had a 40gig western digital 7200rpm drive laying around so I decided to put it on my xbox. Drive works fine for me no probs. Had the drive for a few days now and playing quite a bit. :)

The drive should work fine. I used diskpro to create an exact image if the xbox drive. Then you just format partition 6 to take the full advantage of the capacity of your drive. Tutorial is somewhere on the xbox-scene website.

I will go with a IBM 160GB 7200RPM

id be worried if i was putting an ibm 7200rpm hd into an xbox as these are know to overheat and die if not properly cooled.

i have no idea why u guys are switching out the hard drive on the X-BoX?????for what reason?

the only reason i could come up with is more space? but the hard drive thats already in the X-box is big enough to hold all the games saves u will ever need...

can someone please let me know of the reasons to switch the drive..thanks guys

I think the max size they said was 140.... i could be mistaken...

buddnice the new hard drives are being installed because with the evolutionx bios you can transfer full games to it and run them from there.

With blank DVD-R being as cheap as they are I would think pepole with a Pioneer 104 wouldnt bother, but they do? beyond me that one. Am happy to just burn games to DVD-R and leave the standard hard drive in there.

There are enough fans in the box to do faster than 5400....

handyguy, maybe, maybe not....does it even really matter? you aren't gonna get much improved loading times with 7200 over 5400 (they are fast as hell already) but you *might* get it overheated and they *do* cost more than 5400 :)

just throw the 7200 (they are quite noticeably faster) and whack a fan or two in there aswell blowing over the surface of the hd.

PSIBOB, not all of us would like to leave our xbox case open...I'd prefer to have it look neat (as in, orderly), not like some mad experiment is being done here...
