I have a rather annoying issue with my PC and this is the second time this has come up.

When I start up my P4 2gb machine running XP professional a service SVCHOST is running which takes all the processer and ends up using around 2gb of paged ememory. Now this has just started happening all of a sudden (again). I have removed any and all software that I have installed over the last few days but it has not fixed the problem.

This has happened before and to fix it I reinstaled XP Prof from scratch and then reinstalled my software, piece by piece to see what was causing this. Nothing seemed to be directly the cause.

Now when I end the process it says it is the RPC process and that widows shutdsown after 50 seconds or whatever after.

Any ideas, this is very very very very frustrating!!!!!!

P4 2.0ghz 512mb memory, pioneer a03 dvdr, nvidia graphics, flyvideo tv capture card 2x 40gb hd...

Software installed
office xp
nero
mydvd
prasi primodvd
flyvideo
pc-cillan antivirus

Any help would be much appreciated!!

No did not reformat the HD. The problem did not come back for a week or so therefore it could still be a virus. have scanned though and nothing came up.

Last night I booted of the XP Prof CD and did a repair but it did not fix the problem.

Looks like another full reinstall!

SVCHOST is the part of Windows that looks after services that run from DLL files. These are critical for Windows to work which is why is shuts down when you disable them.
You can check what is involved by typing "Tasklist /SVC" in the CMD window. This will give you a list of services run by SVCHOST in your machine.
You can also check the entries in your registry in
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\Svchost"
You can also change the priority of SVCHOST routines by right clicking them in task manager.
