For the past 2 months my Monitor has gradually got dimmer and dimmer. I've obviously tried the Brightness control but it is at its maximum. If I lower the brightness then it does just that, lowers it. I can only assume that the Monitor is faulty. What I want to know is, is it now just destined for the bin or can it be saved? I don't want to take it to a shop and waste good money just to find it's only fit for the bin. I know this question is a long shot but, thought it worth a try. Thanks guys and gals.
P.S. The Monitor is now so dull I can barely read the text etc.

Does it suddenly become bright again? I had a similar problem start over a year ago but it didnt get that dull, if thats the case probably similar to the one I had then my monitors still working all be it that now the going dull has stopped the screen now goes black and flickery I switch it off and back on agin its ok.

Nope, doesn't suddenly become bright, but you've reminded me that (should have added this is my original posting) if I switch it off for a little while, enough for it to cool down, then when its switched back on, it's even dimmer than the last time and then will gradually brighten up but not to the point where the text etc is easily read. Sorry I didnt add this originally but suffering from brain fade tonight. P.S. I knew you must live fairly close to me, no one would say "nicker" anywhere outside of the North West!! Hahaha

Lol yeah I just removed that bit coz when I read it it didnt make much sense to me and I wrote it but basically theyll probably charge you at least £40 just to look at it so youd be better off getting a new one yuo can pick one up for £70 maybe less.

Its ok, I could understand it, from the North West myself. Anyway, seems a shame to throw away the only 17" Monitor I have. Just my luck that out of the 4 I have, its the 17" one that goes on the blink! Ah well, such is life.

If you're competant with a screw driver and a fine tipped soldering iron and a non-ferous (plastic) 'pot adjuster' - take the case off and have a look for the pots that control the brightness and contrast - you'll have to have power to the monitor and an image on the screen - tweak the brightness pots and see what results you get. You can resolder all the visible solder joints, one or more have them may have 'dried' and when the monitor heats up the gap expands and the image deteriorates. Might save you a bit of money?? Stay away from the coil and capacitor, even when the powers off, unless you really want to fly!!

I agree DONT touch the coil, I accidently touched mine last year when my monitor went faulty, man it hurt!!!!

yeah, be very carefull in there, and only work with one hand, keep the other hand in your pocket..... Seriously, do it, there is 40,000 volts or so on the flyback, its low current and doubtfull it would be fatal, however better safe then dead.... Unless your comfortable with poking around in there just flip for the new monitor....

You'd be better off buying a new monitor. Just turning the pots up to increase the brightness is not finding the source of the problem and you'll more than likely be in the same 'dim' position in a couple of days.

You've probably tried this but in case you haven't, have a look around your 'display properties' and turn the brightness(Gamma) up (if they are there) - adjust the contrast if needs be as well. That's not a solution BTW - it just may improve the screen's output for a short time until you purchase a new one and has the added bonus of not electrocuting you at the same time!

If you are going to play around inside the monitor make sure your not earthed, stand on a rubber mat or something.
