Nothing is foolproof , here is some food for thought .

Use a Host list .
Here is 1 that works . I use it .

You can download this hosts file, unzip it and place it in your Windows directory. YOU SHOULD MAKE A BACK UP of your existing hosts file before you do. The hosts file is called "hosts" there is no extension. You may have a file named Hosts.sam this is merely a sample hosts file.
Once you download the file and put it in the windows folder, reboot your computer and it's a done deal.
Pretty simple huh? You might want to look at the contents of this file as it contains additional information as well as an address for getting updated versions.
Because we're inherently lazy, this works for windows only, don't use it on a mac! Follow the address in the hosts file for alternative system instructions.

To compliment your security settings , even if you use 1 of the above . The steps below will stop activex messages , such as Macromedia .

Browser > Tools or Options > Internet Options > Security , alter ActiveX by setting to Low . ( May have to click on Custom Level )
Or another way to get to the same point > Control Panel > Internet Options > Security > alter ActiveX by setting to Low . ( May have to click on Custom Level )

This is how I have Script Sentry ( Freeware ) configured .
It can be done during Install or by going to ,
Windows Explorer > Programs > Script Sentry .
Double click on the 4th Entry , ScriptSentry , which is the .exe file .
This opens it up , select , File > Configure .
Click on > Set to Recommended .
Click OK .

Windows NT/2000 already comes with this capability, but what about Windows 95, 98 & ME?

System Lock contains numerous Options for security and appearance. It also has a unique

clicking on it will bring up a context menu allowing you to open the prefrences Dialog, or
Unload it from memory.

If you add the paramater '/QUICKLOCK' without the quotes to the end of your shortcut, System
Lock will lock straight away and when the correct password is entered it will unload itself from
memory.

Compatable with Windows 9x/ME
Warning: System Lock can be VERY EASILY bypassed in Windows NT, 2000 and XP. It is NOT
RECOMMENDED that you use System Lock with these operating systems

Don't have ME ThE SnAkE , personally I don't let anybody ( intentionally ) access to my comp , when online .

Not really Id personally go for Win 2000 if it must be windows, and you may want to think about putting your ftp in a DMZ (demiltiarized zone) if your on a network or have more than one pc you could set one up for added security to prevent access to the main network. It could be pretty expensive setting up a DMZ and is more than likely not worth the cost for a home pc. Anyway you want to make it logon only access no anonymous log ons thats to much of a security risk for your resources to protect against (on a home pc).

Maybe your all getting away from the purposes snake meant by security (I maybe wrong) but i think he means his computer not the files being transfered so there isnt much need for encryption and blowfish can be cracked very easily any how. You may want to download outpost firewall its one of the best manually configured software firewalls in my opinion and would be ideal for securing your pc while running an ftp.
