ASPI check (http://www.ewandew.com/cdr/aspichk.exe)
ForceASPI (http://www.ewandew.com/cdr/frcASPI17.zip)
First check your ASPI layer with ASPI check. Then if it isn't correct, download ForceASPI and follow the directions in the index.htm file. Then reboot and recheck with ASPI check.

If you do not have CDRWin 3.9a, I suggest you download this latest version and update yours. Most of the time, it'll solve the problem similar to yours.

ASPI update is necessary for Win2K as it doesn't come with a complete one. Get ASPI from the link Elaine gave above and you must unzip the whole thing to a folder before running instaspi.bat. You'll need to reboot after that.

Fow Win2K & WinXP, you can also get the latest version 4.71 Here (http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/drivers_by_product.html?cat=/Product/ASPI-4.70).

Van, I've heard that some people were having problems with 4.71 so that's why I didn't link to it. :)
