:blockhd: What is the max size of a retail DVD?
:blockhd: What is the max size of a dvd-r? 4.7GB???
:blockhd: Why do dvd-r not hold as much as retail dvd's
:blockhd: is there any way to straight copy retail dvd's without ripping etc.

 Theoretically, about 18Gb (dual sided, dual layer), but I've never seen one.

 DVD-Rs are 4,700,000,000 bytes = 4.38Gb.

 DVD-Rs are limited to single layer, and do hold exactly the same as a retail single sided, single layered disc.

 No, unless the DVD is not protected by the CSS system, which is extremely rare, but the ripping process on SS-SL discs is easy. Even ones that are SS-DL often have many extras which can be discarded so that you can backup the main movie to a DVD-R.

Rolf.

According to the DVD size list the friends episodes are double sided single layer.

Stephen King's The Stand is a DS/DL DVD-18 disc, at 6 hours long.

It is not the software. Pioneer A03, A04, etc. and all other general purpose drives can not write discs with CSS protection on them. Authoring drives can, but they are expensive and require authoring media which is again expensive.
