Hiya,
I bought a brand new soldering iron yesterday (40w/230volts ac) along with some solder wire(aloy 60/40 - dia 1.mm).

Last night i tried it out for the first time but the iron doesnt want to know about the wire, it just burns stairght through the stuff

Am i using to thin wire ?? The nib of the iron im using comes to a point, not like some that look like a screwdriver. Could this be my problem ???

40w? are you crazy? that's TOO hot. use an iron somewhere from 15-30 watts. You will mess up your board if you leave the iron on it too long.

also use 30 gauge wires. they seem to work the best.

flux helps alot also. Put flux where you want to solder.
