gfscvx Jul 20, 2002, 10:08 AM I am thinking of getting windows 2000 advance server for my lan. The computer i want to run it on only has 96mb of ram, and on the box it says you need 128 as a minimum. I am sure in the past i have installed a copy of windows onto a computer with less than the minimum specs, but i can't remember the exact details. Anyway before i splash out, i just wondered if anyone could tell me if it would work, or if it definitly wouldn't work?
thanks,
-tim
hammy18_99 Jul 20, 2002, 12:43 PM thats a tough one to say as its gonna be used for a server and 128 might be the bare min, but if you have to time just try it out and see how its goes. thats always the best way to see sometimes.
Richskie Jul 20, 2002, 01:45 PM It will run on 96mb of ram.
duffy90210 Jul 20, 2002, 01:55 PM 'Splash Out' ??
You serious ? You are going to 'purchase' a copy of Win2000AS and run this on a 96MB PC ? You have any idea how much is a copy of AS ? :)
gfscvx Jul 20, 2002, 02:27 PM thanks, i have a feeling it will run but wasn't sure.
When i said "splash out" i obviously meant "download", i don't need to write that, use your common sense ;)
QWERTY Jul 20, 2002, 03:44 PM Do you actually want use it or just run a screen saver? Because without more memory you'll grow old watching the harddrive light everytime you try to do something on it.
If your actually expect to use it as a server then you should at least meet the minimum requirements. Windows 2000 Professional may run but Advance Server will need more memory then that in order to function usefully.. .
Memory is cheap, just get some more.
gfscvx Jul 20, 2002, 05:54 PM its going to run as a router and web server, maybe some other things as well, i don't even intend to plug a screen into it, or ever turn it off.
I would buy ram but it takes those crappy old simms and i don't know where you can get them anymore, especially at a reasonable price.
Caterman Jul 20, 2002, 07:02 PM Sorry to say m8 but it ain't gonna run as a server, router or anything properly with 96Mb simms and Win2000AS. A serious upgrade is needed.
gfscvx Jul 20, 2002, 08:51 PM When you say "it won't work" do you mean it won't actually work, or that it will be slow to boot up and load applications?
Surely once its up an running then it won't need to do much appart from route a bit of internet traffic which is about 64kb/s!
uk_trader Jul 20, 2002, 11:35 PM It will run the minimum spec is if your goiung to use it for what its meant for running a server which your not so it will work fine.
Badidoh Jul 21, 2002, 12:54 AM I've ran it on 64mb and it worked fine
