Hi i have a lappy running win98se and a Portable Add-Ons Ethernet+ 10/100 Fast network card (PE010) and i cant get it to install properly, downloaded the sopposedly correct drivers from www.portable.co.uk but still cant get them to install. In the drivers downloaded there no actual drivers i can find just a few different programs and files:
Mslanman.dos
Mslanman.os2
Ndis
Odi
Pktdrv

All those are folders and then theres GENCNDIS.EXE which when i load up just says protocol manager not found, GENCTEST.EXE which it a cardbus test util, and it says no card was detected in the selected slot. In the PC CARD setting in windows it detects the network card as Generic-Ethernet 10/100 PC Card - Socket 1 , but notes that the drivers for this device are not installed, tried letting windows search the downloaded drivers but it does not find anything.

Sorry for it probably not making any sense, any help would be greatly appreciated. I am new to this networking lark

Cheers

Try installing a driver manually by selecting one from Windows own driver list. Look for Novell in the Manufacture list and select the NE2000 Compatible driver. That should atleast give you functionality to the card while you try to sort out the correct driver.

After you downloaded the PE011 file, you extract this into a folder on your C: drive (or whereever you like), it should create a bunch of files inc. some sub-folders. (say you have extracted the files to C:\PE011)

Now, under Win98's device manager, choose the network adaptor and choose to update driver, when ask where are the drivers, you need to physically point it at the C:\PE011 folder, this will then pick you the netethf.inf file and set your installation going.

I do not have the same card as you, but the procedures are very similar with other cardbus products.

When you install some networking products, it will ask for some files that may be part of Windows 98's installation, so if the file its looking for is not part of the download, try pointing it to the Win98 installation CD or where the files are kept.
If you still have problem, remove the adaptor from the devices, as well as any other network related listing and start again.
