If you remove a device while power is being fed to it you risk burning the transistors on your M/Board. Your XP may not be on a proper Primary partition and on a logical one instead. An OS can only load correctly from a Primary. You can tell this if you run FDISK or CHKDSK. the easiest way to get working is to boot from CD and reload XP or use the repair console in the installation files on the CD.

Copy ntldr, boot.ini & ntdetect to the hd with XP on (might work), you will have to edit boot.ini with correct drive/partition info.

I had the same dual boot thing when i had XP and 2000 installed, this is what i did:

Boot up in XP
Format HD with 98 on (2000 in my case)

At this point when i rebooted i still had teh dual boot screen - i coudl boot from XP but not from 2000

In XP go Start, Run, type msconfig and go to the boot.ini file, and there is a button saying soemthing test/check, cant remember exactly - click that - it'll find that the code trying to boot 98 is invalid (cos u've formatted the drive with it on) and it'll remove it, and boot automatically everytime with XP

Hope that helps m8
