Is it true that an laptop dvdrom is the same size?
so in theory if I did purchase a laptop dvd-rom and replace this with the xbox one, everything would slide in perferctly and I would not have to set the dvd-rom outside of the xbox

it isn't the same as a laptop drive. Its a MODIFIED pc drive. If you had bothered to look at the power connector you could see it isn't standard. Also the xbox drives power connector has to be left in the xbox drive, or else you get "xbox needs repair", so you can't remove it, thats why people put the other drive outside the box.
