I am currently designing a sepearates hifi for myself, with a budget of around £500 for:

minidisc deck
amp
cd player
speakers

I also have a pc with digital optical output which i would like to put in.

I figure that I have two options: one to connect everything digitally, one to use analogue phonos for the most part.

If I were to connect using digital cables, perhaps using a Sony MDSJE480 Minidisc, Acoustic Solutions DVD 451 (using this as my cd player until I can afford one!), I realise that instead of using a pure integrated amp, i would have to use an AV reciever, perhaps the Sony STRDE875, which has 4 digital ins, 2 digital outs, and an RDS tuner built in! The dvd/cd and PC could be input digitally into the amp/reciever, and the MD which only has a digital in would be connected using phonos. One of the amp/recievers digital outs would be input into the MD, allowing me to record from CD, PC or RDS radio, digitally onto minidisc.

Sound would be taken care of using a pair of Eltax monitor III speakers. Although these can be biwired, I would not be able to afford a pure integrated amp that allows biwiring, so this is not an issue. This setup would allow the most amount of upgradability, in the future, if i decide i wanted surround sound, all that would be required be to buy a 5.1 speaker package.

A second option would be to use a pure integrated amp such as the sony TAFE370 amp, which has 6 inputs. I would still use the Acoustics dvd/cd player, this time using the phono out, and use the analogue output of my PC. However, i would use a Sony netowr MD deck such as the Sony MDSJE780 as this would allow recording from my PC digitally. A digital cable would be used from the dvd/cd to the minidisc deck, so that i would be able to record digitally from PC or CD to Minidisc. However, naturally the integrated amp will not have an RDS tuner, so i will be left without radio [until i can afford one].

Which setup would be better? And also, would either give track marks / cd text when recording from CD or PC? (the second wiould obviously create track marks when using my PC as its a net MD)

Cheers

Try the Consumer forum (CoOp). With a bit of luck, one of the kind Mods will move it for you !

sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but i thought that 'audio' was the best place!

i know its a bit OT, but its still related to cds surely?

Yup, I agree with green_blade so I'm moving it to CoOp.

forget getting a reciever with digital inputs unless you want home cinema go with a pure stereo integrated amp they sound miles better connected analogue to your pc rather than digital makes very little real difference i recommend you buy a cd writer a decent cd player (a cheap marantz?) a decent amp (perhaps a arcam alpha 7 150 at richersounds) and a pair of british made speakers (mission, tannoy b&w etc.) £500 isn't gonna buy you an awful lot. I'm a bit of a hifi fanatic mail me (jeff@20belowzero.net) if you want any further advice
