Want to purchase my kid a newer game system for christmas (presently has PS). INterested in pros and cons of xbox or PS2. Where is the best place to get a pre-mod?

i own a ps2 and i love it. I have played an xbox at my friend's on several occasions and i did not think it was all that great, i thought the ps2 was much better.

i'm an xbox guy myself...BUT

if it's for your son and you plan to get a modchip put in it..then i would say go with ps2,has a much higher game count at this pount

xbox=better machine
ps2= better games

get the ps2 cuz of the games and since ur son has a ps he can play his old games, and use the same controllers

PS2 because of variety of games

the xbox plays dvd much better but the ps2 has the clear advantage on games, but the ps3 is comming out in 2005 while the xbox will last till 2006/7, so if you want it to last longer!!

I say Ps2. I got a PS2, now, I played X-box, but PS2 is better.

X-box has the best specs, but low good games, PS2 has all the games, and if he already has a PS1, get the Ps2, cause the sequels are there.

The next gen systems are already being planned, Ps3, the next X-box(the first one barly got off the ground), and Nintendo never tells you anything until it 80% finished

if you want to easily make copies of games that you rent/borrow, get a ps2. you can do it quickly and easily on your computer since most of them are on cdr. you can also buy just about any game for ps2 on the bst forums for a buck a piece. it is very difficult to copy your own xbox games. you can also buy them on the bst forums but they need to be on dvdr which'll cost ya 4-10 dollars a piece. that's still way to cheap to complain about. you can burn many of them on cdrw or even cdr if your laser will play them (each one is different). ps2 does currently have a better game selection, but you must remember that the xbox is barely 8 months old. 8 months after the ps2 launched, the games were pretty much crap, too. i was a real hardcore playstation fan. i even went so far as to buy a ps2. luckily, i returned it and got a modded xbox instead before i ever opened it. i am SOOOOO glad i went with the xbox. xbox is definitely the future of video games. the games are rapidly getting much better, and there are currently over 300 xbox titles in development. the day i bought the ps2, both the best buy salesman and the electronics boutique salesman tried to convince me that the xbox was better. i laughed at them and told them that they would never convince me that the xbox was better. boy, was i wrong. if you do decide to get a ps2, make sure you get one modded only with the messiah chip. all the other chips (and their are a lot) need a boot disc that you must put in first each time you want to play a game. this is not necessary for any xbox chip. you can also save games directly to the xbox hard drive and play them without any discs at all. you can even upgrade the harddrive to bigger ones. last time i checked at qualitymods.com, you could buy a new xbox w/ chip and a 120 gigabyte harddrive installed (which would hold 50-100 games) for $405 (which is the approximate price of ps2 + messiah). go with the xbox. your kid will thank you. especially next year when the 2nd generation xbox games are swarming the market.

get a ps2, i had the xbox i thought it was crap so i sold it

if u want to get a ps2, then it's fine. if u want to get a xbox, make sure u get ur kid the S controller. :)

the ps2 does have a much larger selection of games, but 95% of them are crap. on the other hand, xbox only has about 75% crap and more great games will come out. personally i would perfer the xbox over the ps2. but if they like ps then ps2 is a upgrade for ur kids.

I played al 3 new consoles. I have a ps2 and i got an Xbox as soon as it came out. But when the Gamecube came out i got too play my friends and i then swapped my Xbox for the gamecube.
So i say if your going too buy anyone off these consoles either get the ps2 or the gamecube.

Well said...the PS2 is a piece of Jap junk, with the majority of their games being targeted at 11 year olds. Had one, and it was not much better than the Dreamcast. It is a kiddie machine compared to the XBOX. As far as game titles, the XBOX is almost on par with PS2 as far as (quality) new titles coming out. But, if you want your Scooby Doo, Wacky Racers, and Brittany Spears Dance Beat then stick with a PS2!

i wouldn't say most of the games for ps2 are crap cause sony company is letting microsoft use some of there games

btw, i did said 75% of the xbox games are crap. but compare to 95%...

Sony have a great pedigree for consoles. Gamees makers love the ps2 and will always be popular.

both r good, ps2 hads backing of japan so there not going to give up, MS sells FA xboxs in japan that could be a big problem

everyone likes different ones, me personally i would like to have both but thats abit silly.

also i hate gamecubes but people love them i just think all the games are crap and 95% are for 8 year old japanese kids

I'd get a ps2 they tend to be cheaper and the games do as well but if you could afford i'd have both!!

PS2, in my opinion.

PS2 its even doing better economically. Xbox doing the poorest because it just sux and everyone hates that greedy bill gates.

for an all in one solution on a budget, i'd go for the Xbox, since it's far more powerful, and being pc-based it's much more adaptable: you can now 'chip' it without a chip (admittedly it's a pain in the butt) or you can use a chip, flash that and remove and re-use the chip easily enough, also with a simple software solution you can now make it permanently multi-region for dvd (and it's a far better dvd player than PS2 also, despite the cack remote you get with it), there's even software now to make it play regular vcds and divx (so I've been told). it also has some great software already (halo, pgr, amped, jsrf, doa3 etc)

then again, i'm currently playing gitaroo man and metal gear solid 2 on ps2 so I guess both have their advantages ;)

and gamecube is lovely too :P
