I want to uninstall xp and go back to win98 I deleted the backup file by accident.

I heard i would have to format the hard drive but I have a 40gig and a lot of things that I dont want to delete I know I should just backup those files but do to my lack of computer skills and failed attempts before I am afraid to do so. If there is a way to remove xp with out formating could someone help me. If there is no way around it could someone layout the steps for me.

Thank you

hi m8

i think your gonna have to format really :( especially as you have deleted the old 98 backup file. but not 2 sure someone may have a way round it..

but if you want to format then just put a 98 boot cd in the floppy when ya turn on and choose start with cd rom support option.

then just type at the command promt screen the line below.

format c:/q/u/v and that will delete everything including the volume so you ill have a copletely fresh drive.. Hope this helps and you get it sorted m8

Another way, if there all programmes, or stand alone files, use a burner and drag and drop them into a folder, may use a few disc's up, but you'll have a full backup of all your gear thats readily recoverable

another way may be to use partition magic, split the drive format the none XP partition in fat32, install win 98. launch XP move your files across, make sure 98 is stable, then format the xp side (fat32) then merge the partitions

yea what he said, create a partition with PP5 and use it to instally . Then uninstall XP and merge if you want.

I have another 8gig harddrive on my computer I was wondering if I was to remove the 40 and format the 8gig and install win98 and then put back in the 40 as a secondary would there be conflicts

You can leave the 40 gig in just change the jumper settings to slave, attach the 8 gig and make that the master (jumper settings should be on the HDs)

Then reformat your 8 gig and put w98 on it. Go here (http://www.billssite.com/guide.htm) and it will tell you what to do.
