Where Did I Go?
Jul 30, 2002, 02:39 AM
Hi all,

I have just got ADSL, and have networked a few machines together. My main machine has XP on it, and the rest have 98\95. I have installed the printer on my main machine, and it works OK. I have set it up to be shared, and there is a printer icon on the network drive.

On my printer settings, it gives me the option to install additional drivers, which I tried installing, however they just don't install.

How can I install the printer on the other machines? - I have tried installing from the CD, right clicking on the printer icon on the network drive and clicking install, but neither work. Once the printer drivers are installed on the machines, I I change the port settings, and point it to the printer icon on the network drive.

When I try and print, I get an error; "Problem Communicating With The Printer". What could it be?

I have a feeling that there is some setting that I need to change somewhere, but I don't know where.

The printer is a: - Lexmark Z52

Appreciate the help,

Many Thanks

yes m8 if you want to install a printer on another machine as long as you have right set up a share on the printer by right clicking on printer icon share/sharing then give it a name.
To set up this printer on a win98 PC you then set up new printer, network printer and just type the path i.e
say your computer name is "fred" and the printer share is called "printer"
you would then type in the path
\\fred\printer

then just run through the rest and it should then be installed.

Any hints?

They have to be on the same workgroup.
Try pinging the Printer PC and vice versa.

Hi m8,

This sounds new to me, (don't know if I have done this). How do I make the printer be on the same workgroup. I thought it was, because it shows up in "Network Neighbourhood".

Please can you\anyone explane what this "pinging" means.

Thanks

Bump Up, I still can't sort this! :(

OK, I have found another problem, which I think relates to this network problem.
From my XP machine I can PRINT OK and access the Printer Control Panel OK, but if I go into Cartidge Maintenance, (i.e to check ink levels), I get the same error as above: -

Problem Communicating With The Printer

Any suggestions?

Also, please can someone explain what this Pinging stuff means?

Thanks!
