You might be able to get an open box unit at your local best buy for $699. People have been returning them because it doesnt work they way they want them too, and it leaves a good price for those of us who are interesed.

From the things I read about it most people like it, but some do have issues. Its hit ro miss I guess.

Had one 4 months now and cant fault it in any way. Picture quality on 1or2 hour mode is as good as the original source.
It can record & play at the same time like Tivo. Also you can burn onto DVDRs which is great as you wont have to rip dvds when copying from another DVDplayer just do it realtime. DVDrs are cheap and great for tranferring all your Home Vids. DVDram is by far the most advance format as it has the abilty to record and play at the same time. Also you can record upto 6 hours on a standard disc and 12 hours on a double sided one. DVDram obviously is not compatable with DVD players but that doesnt matter because if you are going to lend discs out you are better off doing that with cheap DVDrs which work on any dvd player.
The dmre20 is the best out there even better than the Pioneer which is coming out that wont have the Tivo feature but will have Firewire. If you can get one for $699 ill have another 3

bub1,until you have used BOTH the Pioneer and the E20,I suggest your not saying the E20 is better! It is cheaper, not better! I have had my Pioneer since the first part of December. Its picture and sound are far better than the Panasonic. As for the Tivo type function,I never liked Tivo.If I wanted Tivo,my Personal Cinema graphics card does that!Maybe by the time they get to the E40,Panasonic might have a fair product. If you don't want the best, buy Panasonic!I don't use my DVD recorder as a toy.I need the quality for my clients!:hdspin:

Fair enough for you Jeepers but DVDr units are aimed at the everyday user not for someone that resells DVDrs and so thats why to have the abilty to record and play at the same time outweighs anything else.
You keep saying the e20 is a toy thats your opinion and YOURS ONLY. I dont care what you say about picture quality on the e20, as long as you record in 1 or 2 hour mode the quality will be as good as the original source. How can you say different Jeepers? your review is biased towards the Pioneer. I have taken several DVDR recordings to different peoples houses along with the original DVD they came from and you just couldnt tell the difference. Even if the Pioneer has better picture quality I think most people will opt for the Toy e20 as you call it, as it a much more useful machine even without firewire which seems is the only advantage of owning the Pioneer. Oh by the way Jeepers I have seen the Pioneer in action in Londons Totenham Ct Road .I said to myself you must be having a laugh, is this supposed to be superior to the e20 , take it from me people you would be better of buying the Philips DVDr1000 than the new Pioneer unit which is about to be launched in the UK

By the way Mr Chipper I am a UK user

i have two of these machines running and all i can say they are top notch, i also have a few pioneer ao3s for duplicating.
the e20 is a time saving device for me, rather than spend all night reencoding stuff you just feed it into it and voila, i agree the quality is same as source on 1/2 hour mode. and the great thing is you can set it up so it uses the best quality available for the space you have on the disk.
Its a top machine in my opinion.
If you got the cash get one bought - you wont regret it

bub1,UP YOURS! I have a right to try to clear up your misinformastion! Yes,the E20 records ok.If you want to use it for selling bootleg copies of dvds. Myself,I have been doing video editing for over 25 years.I use my equipment to produce dvds for over 15 regular clients. For what they pay, they deserve the best I can give them.If you want to see the 2 recorders side by side, just stop by my office! In short, for Nokias needs it may be the best buy.It will do what he wants. However it does not live up to the Pioneers ability! As for your buying 3 at $699,I can get them for $674! How many do you want NOW! By the way,I have a new Pioneer 9000 on its way.I also have the AO3,and an HP 100i.

just to let you folks it was not my intention to take sides,
im merley stating what i think of the machine and for the purpose i need it for it is ideal, that doesnt mean it is ideal for someone else with a different purpose.
The pioneer in all honesty is a better machine for the 'serious' user as we have had one sent to our offices for testing but that doesnt mean the pansonic is a bad machine, it just isnt upto to the industry standard that jeepers or the serious user may require.

so come on folks stop bickering, lets help mr chipper who was asking about the panasonic e20 and what we thought of it

I thought that I would leave this post here for a while, but I guess it is time to move it on now... So, moving it to the consumer opinion forum.

UP MINE Jeepers thats not very nice, not once did I get personal to you I was Just stating MY OWN OPINION. You slated my machine so I slated yours its that simple. If you cant take criticism dont dish it out. As far as I am cocerned this subject is closed without me throwing any abuse anywhere.
As for the cheapest place in the UK for the E20 I did see it on a site for £825 i think if I find it ill post it.

sort of offtopic, but this really bothers me. the point of the consumer's opinion forum is to state your opinion and let others state theirs. if someone disagrees with the facts stated, it is perfectly within their right to argue those facts, but we're not here to argue over opinions. jeeper's opinion is his and his only just as yours is yours and yours only. i agree that his post sounded a bit edgy, but i think its completely intolerable to start a flamewar about something like this, and especially intolerable to try to keep others quiet. all that needed to be said was that you don't think its a toy, and don't notice a difference in the quality, etc... no emotions need be involved.

i probably shouldn't be posting this, but conduct like this really irks me on such an otherwise friendly forum!

I use the E20 in conjunction with my Kron and Casablanca viseo editing systems for 'professional' DV wedding DVD's. The quality is superb and my work is the envy of the North West Professional Videographers Association. For DV to DVDR I havent seen any better quality.

PLEASE HELP
I`AVE JUST GOT ONE
PLAYS O.K.
BUT IT WILL NOT RECORD
I USE PRINCO DVD-R DISC
I PRESS RECORD AND NOTHING HAPPENS

bub1

Do not use Princo, they dont work at all well on the E20(I have tried myself). I have found Datasafe the best of the cheap media(£2 each) or even better Nokianeeds does an excellent DVDr for the E20 @ £2.50 each. Use either and you wont have a problem.

Are they Datasafe branded? that SVP sells, if they are i would then reccomend using Nokianeeds DVDrs. I have found also that certain cheap DVDrs will work on some E20 but not others. The U11 message means your E20 doesnt like that brand of disc. I have had no probs with the branded Datasafes, you might find a brand that works on your E20 that wont work on mine, it seems the E20 is very fussy on cheap media. My advice is try several cheap brands by buying a disc at a time and then stick to it.

Bub1 are there any add-ons/firmware upgrades for the E20 to allow chapter selection menus to be created etc.? The only way I get chapters to appear on the default crappy DVD menu is to use stop and start then edit the chpater title etc.

Cheers

I have phoned Panasonic about future firmware updates and they said that there will never be any. Unfortunately you are stuck with what the machine offers. Maybe this can be an improvement in the next model.

Panasonic is coming out w/ the e30 in the next 3-4 months. Apparently, it has firewire in but no out. so you cannot link your pc to it. For those of you in the U.K. I believe you already had the firewire in. Also, they're coming out at the same time with a dvd recorder with a built in 40gb hard drive so you can edit right there and then save to dvd-r or dvd ram. This one looks like it will be a winner but I can't remember the model # at this time.
