Hi M8.
Most Karaoke discs are in the CD+G format.
Although not as rare as they once were, most players do not have the capability to read the Graphic content of the disc ( the words that display on your screen)
This sounds like your problem-your players are not compatible with the CDG Karaoke format.
A couple of options to consider are;
Obtain a compatible player or CDRom drive.
Get the discs converted to VCD video disc format by someone with the relevant hardware and then play them on your machine as VCD's
Get them converted to MP3 + G format and play them back on your PC.
Hope this helps

They ARE audio discs, the graphics part is written on a subchannel. You MUST have a machine which is specifically CD+G capable to see the graphics part of these discs. What the 'karaoke' function on your DVD player refers to is probably multiplex ie it will mute a channel or a bandwidth in order for you to sing along with ordinary CDs.

Very few DVD Player's are able to play back CD+G format, so it is unlikely that you DVD will support your discs. The "Karaoke" function on DVD Players has long been confusing in this respect, and as Vinnie stated above, it usually just means that your DVD has a built in Multiplex Facility and a mic(s) input that will allow you to sing along to standard Audio CD's.
Sadly, you will not get the "Words on screen" function when you play CD+G disc's in a Standard DVD Player.
In order to play CD+G disc's, you will need to either use a Supported CDROM drive and your P.C, or invest in a Karaoke Player, which will connect to your TV via the Scart Socket.
