i'm thinking of removing my dvd rom and fitting the pioneer 104 in its place.
it would be the master with a plextor cd burner on the same ide ribbon. anyone think this not advisable? any advice welcomed.....

ps - the reason i would remove my old dvd rom drive is because as far as i know you can't copy dvd's on the fly.......and i have the plextor drive anyway for cds.

1 st you can copy dvds on the fly but it is a risk . a bit of dirt etc . i have done many on the fly no probs, but the risk is up to you.
i have my ao3 and miria cd burner on same ribbon and my dvd rom on another cable with no probs

If you're thinking of using the 104 for ripping dvd's bear in mind it's very slow. It was taking me 1-1.5 hours to rip each dvd, so I bought a cheap dvd player for ripping, and it now only takes around 10 minutes.....

hmmmmmmm.......over an hour to rip compared to a normal dvd rom!!!!
bugger that......would everything be ok if I fitted it as a 3rd drive but put it on its own ide cable?????
do I leave the 104 set to master??? would that work????
would xp recognise it ok that way???

i know some people might say why don't you try it.......however my modem does not support xp and I've ordered a new one, so while i'm waiting on it I'm sticking with win 98.............cheers

How many eide channels have you got? What drives are intending putting on each (ie hard drives, optical drives)?

ok m8, i have 3 ide channels......the hard drive is on its own cable as the master....the dvd rom and cd writer are on the same cable with the dvd as the secondry master and the writer as the slave.....

would it be easier putting the dvd burner on with the hard drive???

if so as a slave???????

cheers........

No, it'd probably seriously affect your pc's performance (it'll reduce the read/write speeds of your hard drive if an optical drive is on the channel).

You're either going to have to choose two out of the cdrw, dvd & dvdr drives and ditch the third, or get an eide controller card. Not sure how much they are at the moment, but I think they're pretty cheap. If you go for the first option, you've got to decide which is more important; dvd ripping speed, dvd burning or cd burning. The dvdrw drive will also do cd's, but I've not tried them with mine (I use my cdrw drive as it's up to 20x write).
