i bought an enigmah-x final and installed it in my xbox which had a manufacture date of oct.2001 and it would only run about half of the dvdr's i bought. i then took the games to my friends modded box which had a manufacture date of march 2002 and they all played perfect. note that i have the 3944 kernel and he has the 4034 kernal. i then thought it was my laser so i swapped dvd-roms with my brothers who's xbox also happens to be a 3944 with a manufacture date of november 2001 and the same games gave me the same problems with a newer dvdrom??? wierd huh?? i sold my xbox without the chip, bought a new one and installed the same chip i had and guess what? it had a manufacture date of march 2002 and the 4034 kernal and all the games play perfect. Does someone know something i dont know? i am beginning to think there may be a bug with the 3944 kernal xboxes...or perhaps i am jumping to conclusions. please post any theories or suggestions.

did you change the jumper setting on the Enigmah chip when you put it into the 3944 box? there is a jumper setting that is swapped between the 2 boxes..

yes i did...at first i thought maybe i put the switch to the wrong position but i double checked and when i swapped it with the newer xbox i flipped the switch to the other position.

Kernel has nothing to do with what the laser can read. I have a 3944 XBox and I can read CDRs. I also have the Philips DVDROM drive.
